Airline terms , phrases & abbreviations
Every profession has its own language or ” jargon ” which can sound very confusing to an
outsider .
Airlines are no different , and you will come across many strange sounding words during your first
few weeks .
cabin crew course has listed some of the more common words and phrases , so that you can
become familiar with them .
SBT
Standby – to wait at home , the airport or hotel , ready to be called out to operate a flight
Transit
An aircraft stop on the ground between flights.
TBN
to be notified- used if a flight is delayed and no departure time has been confirmed
Gate
The point in the airport terminal where passengers board and disembark from the aircraft
Taxying
The aircraft moving on the ground under its own power .
Sector
The flight from tack-off to landing
STD
Scheduled time of departure
STA
Scheduled time of arrival
A/C

Fuselage
body or framework of the aircraft
Bulkhead
Partition walls inside the aircraft usually between cabins
FWD or Forward
The Front part of te aircraft
Art or rear
the back of the aircaft
Galley
An aircraft kitchen .
Stowage
A cupboard or container in a galley
Dry stores
Food items such as coffee , biscuits , sugar kept in the aircraft galleys
Amenties
Items for passengers use e. g tissues , soap , games etc kept onboard the aircraft.
Bar cart
A service trolley with drawers containing bar supplies
Meal cart
A service trolley contains preset meal trays
Warming / holding oven
an attachment which can be placed on top of meal cart to keep dishes hot

Unserviceable
Embarkation
when a passenger gets onborad the aircraft .
Disembarkation
when a passenger gets off the aircraft
VIP
very important passenger
CIP
Commercially important person / passenger
UM
Unaccompanied minor , a child travelling alone
PAX or PAP
Passenger.
DHD or Deadheading
