Sainsbury’s Bank was in the early planning stages of a £350 million separation, integration and build
programme. Their main concerns were how they could staff up in a flexible, efficient and flexible
manner across a number of change silos with relatively aggressive deadlines and initially large volumes.
Particular concern was around availability of resource in the Edinburgh market given the numbers
required. Sanderson started to engage with Sainsbury’s Bank in September 2012 under a Non-
Disclosure Agreement.
At the time the Bank were a 50/50 JV with Lloyds Banking Group and we were brought in to assist in
resource planning and the placement of a number of key senior interim hires to start driving this piece
of separation work (which at the time was not public information). This early engagement and access to
high level planning allowed us to forecast demand at perceived “peak” points during the programme.
We then could analyse our existing working population and filter tried and tested resources into the
most relevant streams of work at the required points during the programme. In addition we could also
analyse some of the more niche requirements and where suitable utilise our national population where
local resource may simply not have been available in the required volumes
Over the last 24 months we have placed in excess of 150 business change interims that command
specific banking product and systems experience to include but not restricted to Cards (Credit &
Debit), Savings, Loans, Payments, Insurance, Risk and ATM. Skill-sets include Programme Directors/
Managers, Project Management, PMO, Business Analysis, Architecture and Testing. We are their
number one supplier across their New Bank Programme and are now both consulting with them and
sourcing long term hires, on both a contract and permanent basis, that will embed this separation
activity on the operational side of the business and “run the bank” into the future.

Nationwide historically utilised a single managed service supplier to provide contract resources. This
supplier has provided a contingent service based on CV provision, with shortlisting and interview
responsibilities sitting with the Nationwide recruiting manager. Due to their increasing demand for
project focused resource, Nationwide sought a partner organisation to alleviate some of these time
pressures from their hiring community. Nationwide had additional concerns over the time taken to bring
resources on-board as well as the resources overall quality.
We designed and implemented a service which addressed the time and quality issues Nationwide were
experiencing, whilst also taking responsibility for the shortlisting and interview process. This solution
positioned members of our team on-site with Nationwide to understand, in detail, each specific
requirement then source and interview a shortlist of relevant candidates prior to presenting an ideal
candidate to the recruiting manager. This process greatly reduced the ‘time’ overhead for the recruiting
manager and ensured all hires experienced a uniform interview process.
Within the first 18 months this service delivered over 150 Project and Programme Managers and
BusinessAnalystsintoNationwide,withgreatlyimprovedtimescales.Inaddition,theconsistentinterview
process and performance monitoring ensured a higher quality of resource. The major achievement of
this solution has been the alleviation of pressure on Nationwide’s recruiting managers. Where previously
multiple interviews had been common place, the solution delivered the best candidate, first time.
‘With a growing portfolio and a need to obtain resources quickly, we had to broaden our supplier
base and find a process that was less time consuming for our recruiting managers. We have been
extremely pleased with the service it provides, the quality of the resource supplied and the much
reduced timescales, management and administrative overhead.’

In early 2014, Towergate created a new relationship hub in Manchester to be responsible for managing
and servicing the Small Business Unit within Towergate Insurance. Due to the aggressive timescales
for the centres launch, Towergate sought a partner to alleviate the pressure of recruiting over 400
customer service professionals by taking ownership for all resourcing activity including recruitment
brand development, sourcing, selection and onboarding.
RM designed and implemented a full recruitment campaign which focused on promoting Towergate
as an ‘employer of choice’ within Manchester as well as addressing the need to recruit large volumes
of candidates in tight timeframes and the challenge of running regular assessment centres without an
established team of line managers and team leaders. RM provided a full time Project Manager to ensure
the smooth running of the campaign. During implementation, full briefings were taken to understand
requirements. RM created a campaign theme, ‘the Towergate Build’, and created the collateral (careers
site, print, outdoor and online advertising) to launch. During sourcing we conducted in-depth telephone
screening to ensure quality candidates at interview. This process greatly reduced the time overhead
for Towergate and ensured a consistent candidate experience. RM designed the Assessment Centre
process from scratch. During selection, RM were positioned onsite to lead and support activities and
facilitate swift feedback.
Within the first 6 months this service delivered in excess of 250 customer service agents and team
leaders, ensuring that the relationship hub was open for business as planned. In addition, the bespoke
assessment centres and enthusiasm of the RM team helped to ensure the quality of candidates
recruited, as well as providing a positive experience and building engagement prior to the start date.
“Having Resource Management as part of the Project Team within Towergate has assisted us in being
able to source and attract the right people with the skills and attitudes required for the success of the
business. Resource Management have been able to provide flexibility and innovative solutions to assist
us in the attraction and selection campaign.”

AspartoftheOneRoyalLondongroupwidechangeprogrammeandthestrategicneedforanoperational
redesign of the business it was identified that the procurement function was not operating as effectively
as possible. The function was described as primitive and old school, having not been modernised in
line with the changing market, technology advancements and business needs. FirstPerson Executive
was appointed to conduct the strategic appointment of a Head of Procurement and Facilities for the
business to transform the department into a modern offering. Key to success would be an individual
who lived in the North West, has a large financial services company background and demonstrable
experience of creating a procurement function from scratch in a changing environment.
Through custom research, it was identified the pool of financial services organisations in the North West
was reasonably limited to <20 organisations. In order to provide the client with the biggest possible pool
of candidates to select from, the search was adapted to include other organisations outside of financial
services of a similar size and scale to Royal London, with a similar level of IT infrastructure, that have
been through a period of change or transformation and are based in the North West. The revised target
areas for the search provided access to consultancies, professional services, telecommunications,
education, manufacturing and transportation.
FirstPerson considered a total of 102 companies, 128 people and held 15 face to face interviews for
this assignment. Of 15 interviews, 8 individuals were progressed for long list, 4 with financial services
and 4 with non financial services experience. The client ultimately selected 4 individuals to progress
to formal interviews all of which came from outside of the financial services sector. The first choice
candidate was successfully appointed in November 2014 and joined from automotive manufacturer,
Jaguar Land Rover.
