Over 1,500 Greek police officers received specialized training on protecting Olympic officials and delegations for the 2004 Athens Olympics. The training, which began in 2003, covered topics like analyzing past terrorist attacks, prevention methods, and planning official travel routes and surveillance. Officers learned instinctive driving techniques, formation driving, vehicle ramming, and foot movement exercises to protect officials from mock attacks using paintballs in various open and closed spaces. The goal was to prepare the police force to safely evacuate officials from immobilized vehicles or sites of attacks and escape to secure locations.

H Greek Police for the Olympic Games has trained over 1,500 police officers on issues of Official Protection,
Protection of members of the Olympic Family and Olympic Missions that are in our country during the
Games.
The instructors are Greek Police, who have received special training from American experts in Persons Official
Protection.
H philosophy of education includes:
analyzing terrorist attacks
the prevention method - avoidance - preventing and suppressing an attack, and
analysis of official travel routes and surveillance detection
Alongside basic education, the Police carry out the general conservative education in purely practical nature
and place and specific conservative critical level education officials with a high risk profile.
After the training the Police for the security of public figures is well prepared to cope in this pivotal role.
H This training, which began in early 2003, will contribute significantly to the Olympic Games 2004 in
complete safety.
Basic training includes:
Instinctive driving with fast driving exercises on the track
Here the trainee learns:
accident prevention techniques,
how to brake and turning
and how to brake effectively in a straight line and cornering
Also practiced in slalom and lane closed exercises.
Slalom formation of 4 vehicles
Here the driver gains experience of driving a short distance relative to the vehicle ahead. He learns also
overtaking techniques in conditions of intense traffic.
Move the vehicle backwards at an angle
In this case, the learner understands the art evacuation to rewind. Whenever the traffic conditions this
technique is effective to prevent an attack.
Ramming vehicle collision at constant vehicle and escape
Through this exercise, the learner acquires the experience of hitting a parked vehicle blocking his way and
trying to entrap him. Ramming the vehicle escapes from the point.

2. Movement on the track with interference
Here, the driver learns the techniques applied in order to move a convoy safely without interfering with other
vehicles.

The training also includes:

In this exercise the student learns how to protect the official from attack, manifested against him with
paintballs in various areas
In particular the students are practicing techniques of disengagement with coverage and immediate removal
of the official from the site of the attack in a safe place from the attack site.
Attacks on open space, with immobilization of the convoy
Here the learner understands the regular halting aggression manifested in open space with paintballs,
grenades and smoke bombs against the official procession. The goal is to safely carried by the official from
the immobilized vehicle to another accompanying vehicle and escape.
