The Outreach for Medicine project at King's College London School of Medicine offers the Med-View program to encourage local students to pursue careers in medicine. Med-View is a three-day conference for year 12 and access course students that provides opportunities to attend medical lectures and workshops, visit clinical departments, and gain advice from medical students. Thirty free places are available through an application process for students who may not otherwise have access to similar programs.

Med-View 2011
(For Year 12 and Access course students only)
The Outreach for Medicine project at King’s College London School of Medicine works to encourage and enable
young people from local boroughs to study at medical school or to train for careers in the health service or
biomedical sciences. The activities offered are designed to familiarise local students with the requirements of a
career in the medical professions, and to introduce them to ways of gaining the skills and experience needed to
make such a career a reality.
Med-View is one of the activities Outreach for Medicine offers. It is only available for year 12 and Access course
students who are seriously considering a career in medicine. It consists of a three-day medical taster conference
taking place during the Easter break from Monday 11th
- Wednesday 13th
April 2011 (plus an optional 4-hour St
John Ambulance “Community First Aid” training session during the Summer break), and will give you the
opportunity to discover more about what and how student’s study at Medical School and take part in GP/ward
visits to observe what doctors actually do.
There are 30 places available on Med-View, all of which are free of charge. Places are specifically targeted at
those students who ordinarily might not have the opportunity to attend similar conferences elsewhere. Lunch
and refreshments will be provided free of charge each day. We will cover your travel costs to your GP/ward visits,
and you will receive a certificate of attendance once you have successfully completed the course.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
• Attend lectures by leading medical researchers
• Take part in interactive workshops on subjects like anatomy and practical clinical skills
• Participate in small group tutorial discussion groups
• Visit clinical departments and/or GP surgeries
• Gain advice and ‘survival tips’ from current medical students.
Applications for Med-View will be assessed using the following selection criteria:
• By the ‘widening participation criteria’ section of the application form. This section includes standard
questions that will help us to establish your eligibility for the conference.
• By the quality of your answers to the other questions on the application form.
• By demonstrating that you are seriously considering applying to medical school.
How to apply
To be considered for a place at Med-View 2011, you will need to complete a Med-View 2011 application form and
return it by email to outreachformedicine@kcl.ac.uk by Monday 31st
January 2011. All applicants will be
contacted by the end of February regarding the outcome of their application.
