MARKET REQUIREMENTS
Metal adhesion is an issue for packaging converters worldwide due to the
poor metal to polymer substrate bonding which can occur during vacuum
metallization which results in de-lamination and ultimately leads to a
failure of the packaging. There is currently an increasing global demand
for metallized ļ¬lm with higher metal adhesion levels, this is due to the
market demand for increasingly complex packaging structures which
require a lamination peel strength which is appropriate for these more
complex packaging structures.
Part of the problem is the drop of surface energy on the metal side over
time which also contributes to poor lamination bonding and can lead to
problems in conversion when further laminating or printing occurs on the
coated side. Plasma treatment alone in not the answer as it is able to
increase adhesion but has no effect on the surface energy of the coating.
De-lamination leads to product rejects and loss of reputation.
IMPROVING ADHESION AND SURFACE ENERGY
Adhesion of metal to corona treated CPP is usually poor, leading to issues
with lamination. By using the BOBST AluBondā„¢ process, the adhesion of
the metal to the CPP ļ¬lm can be increased, without the use of further
plasma treatment.
The surface energy of the ļ¬lm is also increased with the level of BOBST
AluBondā„¢ applied. Compared to standard corona treated CPP the initial
surface energy is much higher, the higher surface energy is also retained for
longer;after 175 days the surface energy is still higher than standard
metallized CPP.

BOBST is gaining market share in the Iberian BOPP
market with the sale of a BOBST K5000 2450 vacuum
metallizer equipped with BOBST Hawkeye pinhole
detector and optical density monitoring system to
Polivouga based in Portugal.
POLIVOUGA ENTERS METALLIZED BOPP MARKET
The BOBST K5000 will be the ļ¬rst vacuum metallizer to
be installed at Polivougaā€™s BOPP ļ¬lm plant in Portugal;
the Polivouga Group owned by the Barros family has
traditionally been in the agricultural and ļ¬‚exible
packaging ļ¬lm industry, being a market leader in the
Iberian peninsula but in June 2015 decided to diversify
into BOPP ļ¬lm production with the purchase of a ļ¬lm
line and have this year added a second BOPP ļ¬lm line.
In order to meet their customersā€™ needs for metallized
BOPP ļ¬lm, Polivouga made the decision to purchase a
metallizer; they chose BOBST due to their strong
reputation in the market for high productivity
machines and robust process knowledge in the area of
BOPP ļ¬lms which requires specialist handling. Another
key advantage of the BOBST offering is the BOBST
Hawkeye for its Optical Density (OD) control and defect
reduction capabilities; the company uses Hawkeye as
a quality control mechanism and full traceability which
ensures their metallized ļ¬lm is of the best quality.
SPECIALIST IN BOPP METALLIZATION
BOBST have become known in the industry as
specialists in BOPP metallzation;the renowned winding
mechanism for tension control and effective heat
management has led to the BOBST K5000 becoming
the standard machine in the BOPP Film industry around
the world due to its ability to keep the ļ¬lm cool and to
minimise winding defects.
Polivouga began operating in 1982 with the
manufacture of ļ¬lm and sleeves for the agricultural
and industrial sectors. The company is based in
Albergaria-a-Velha at a high-tech facility incorporating
a state-of-the-art laboratory where quality
management is carried out.The company has a broad
customer base which includes agricultural, food and
drink, glass and ceramics companies.

METALLIZERā€ˆFORā€ˆIBERIANā€ˆBOPPā€ˆMARKET
Commenting on the recent purchase,Tiago Barros,
General Manager from Polivouga saidā€œOur venture
into BOPPļ¬lm has been very successful very quickly,
to further develop our offering for our customers,we
decided to invest in a vacuum metallizer to be able to
metallize in-house.Based on BOBSTā€™s reputation in
the market for vacuum metallizing in particular for
BOPPļ¬lm they were our ļ¬rst choice, our decision was
further conļ¬rmed when we heard about the Hawkeye
system which is perfect for us as a quality control toolā€
WHATā€ˆOURā€ˆCUSTOMERā€ˆSAYS:
The BOPP ļ¬lm market in India has retained better
proļ¬tability in recent times and this has created a
positive environment for investment in this area. The
trend in the market is towards higher output and wider
ļ¬lm lines.
TREND EXTENDS TO METALLIZING MARKET
This trend is also being translated to the vacuum
metallizing market;previously 2450mm or 2850mm
vacuum metallizers have been seen as suitable but
with the move towards wider and wider ļ¬lm lines,
metallizers also need to be wider with 3250mm and
3650mm now being the minimum size which is required
by the market. Additionally as ļ¬lm line and slitter
suppliers are developing better winding characteristics
for larger diameter reels there is the opportunity to
metallize longer reel lengths and 1270mm and
1350mm diameter reels are becoming more common.
These changes in market requirements are driven by
the need to increase production output and reduce
operation cost during ļ¬lm metallization which are vital
in the largely commoditised ļ¬lm industry in India.
EXPERTS IN WIDE WEB METALLIZATION
BOBST are known as experts in the wide web market
and are the producer of the widest metallizer in the
world (K5000 4850mm) which is based in Indonesia;
BOBSTā€™s process knowledge has enabled the design
and production of wide web metallizers that are
equipped to run large diameters at high speeds whilst
keeping the ļ¬lm cool through the machineā€™s unique
heat management system which protects the barrier
properties of the ļ¬lm;the BOBST renowned winding
system also produces virtually wrinkle-free ļ¬lm.
INVESTMENTS FROM LEADING INDIAN FILM PRODUCERS
Cosmo Films Limited, a global leader in speciality BOPP
ļ¬lms and Chiripal Poly Films Limited, a leading ļ¬lm
producer based in India have recently placed orders for
a BOBST wide web metallizer to accompany their wide
web BOPP ļ¬lm lines.
With eight BOPP lines & three metallizers and one
BOPP line and a metallizer on its way, Cosmo Films
enjoys a global presence with plant cum distribution
centres in US, Korea and Japan and channel partners in
more than 80 countries. The company offers range of
BOPP ļ¬lms for ļ¬‚exible packaging, lamination, labelling
and industrial applications and has several specialty
solutions for better barrier performance.
Chiripal Poly Films has established excellent quality
standards within both the domestic and global markets
since its entry into ļ¬‚exible packaging in 2012 and is one
of the fastest growing ļ¬lm producers in the sector. With
two state of the art BOPP lines, one BOPET line and a
new investment in BOPP announced for 2017, the
company goes from strength to strength.

There is currently an increasing global demand for metallized ļ¬lm with higher metal adhesion levels, this is due to the market demand for increasingly complex packaging structures which require a lamination peel strength which is appropriate for these more complex packaging structures. Part of the problem is the drop of surface energy on the metal side over time which also contributes to poor lamination bonding and can lead to problems in conversion when further laminating or printing occurs on the coated side. Plasma treatment alone in not the answer as it is able to increase adhesion but has no effect on the surface energy of the coating. De-lamination leads to product rejects and loss of reputation. IMPROVING ADHESION AND SURFACE ENERGY Adhesion of metal to corona treated CPP is usually poor, leading to issues with lamination. By using the BOBST AluBondā„¢ process, the adhesion of the metal to the CPP ļ¬lm can be increased, without the use of further plasma treatment. The surface energy of the ļ¬lm is also increased with the level of BOBST AluBondā„¢ applied. Compared to standard corona treated CPP the initial surface energy is much higher, the higher surface energy is also retained for longer;after 175 days the surface energy is still higher than standard metallized CPP. 20 50 45 60 55 40 35 30 25 Dyne(g.cm/2 ) 5 19 35 8511 Days AluBondTM Dyne Level Over Time on CPP* AluBondTM Standard 0 6 5 4 3 2 1 N/15mm 0 2 3 4 51 AluBondTM Intensity Peel Force Change With AluBondTM Level on Standard CPP Adhesion (N/15mm)

The trend in the market is towards higher output and wider ļ¬lm lines. TREND EXTENDS TO METALLIZING MARKET This trend is also being translated to the vacuum metallizing market;previously 2450mm or 2850mm vacuum metallizers have been seen as suitable but with the move towards wider and wider ļ¬lm lines, metallizers also need to be wider with 3250mm and 3650mm now being the minimum size which is required by the market. Additionally as ļ¬lm line and slitter suppliers are developing better winding characteristics for larger diameter reels there is the opportunity to metallize longer reel lengths and 1270mm and 1350mm diameter reels are becoming more common. These changes in market requirements are driven by the need to increase production output and reduce operation cost during ļ¬lm metallization which are vital in the largely commoditised ļ¬lm industry in India. EXPERTS IN WIDE WEB METALLIZATION BOBST are known as experts in the wide web market and are the producer of the widest metallizer in the world (K5000 4850mm) which is based in Indonesia; BOBSTā€™s process knowledge has enabled the design and production of wide web metallizers that are equipped to run large diameters at high speeds whilst keeping the ļ¬lm cool through the machineā€™s unique heat management system which protects the barrier properties of the ļ¬lm;the BOBST renowned winding system also produces virtually wrinkle-free ļ¬lm. INVESTMENTS FROM LEADING INDIAN FILM PRODUCERS Cosmo Films Limited, a global leader in speciality BOPP ļ¬lms and Chiripal Poly Films Limited, a leading ļ¬lm producer based in India have recently placed orders for a BOBST wide web metallizer to accompany their wide web BOPP ļ¬lm lines. With eight BOPP lines & three metallizers and one BOPP line and a metallizer on its way, Cosmo Films enjoys a global presence with plant cum distribution centres in US, Korea and Japan and channel partners in more than 80 countries. The company offers range of BOPP ļ¬lms for ļ¬‚exible packaging, lamination, labelling and industrial applications and has several specialty solutions for better barrier performance. Chiripal Poly Films has established excellent quality standards within both the domestic and global markets since its entry into ļ¬‚exible packaging in 2012 and is one of the fastest growing ļ¬lm producers in the sector. With two state of the art BOPP lines, one BOPET line and a new investment in BOPP announced for 2017, the company goes from strength to strength. WIDEā€ˆWEBā€ˆTRENDā€ˆINā€ˆINDIANā€ˆBOPPā€ˆMARKET
