- 3. Epigraph • “Nature was here something savage and awful, though beautiful. I looked with awe at the ground I trod on, to see what the Powers had made there, the form and fashion and material of their work. This was that Earth of which we have heard, made out of Chaos and Old Night{cut}…….. long passage” Henry David Thoreau. • In this short portion of the quote, I believe Thoreau is showing his mixed positive and negative feeling about the power of nature in terms of being alone ,and how it was influenced by the powers. • In my opinion, this quote is related to the chapter regarding the Chris’s deadly adventure, and how the nature is dangerous when we are alone.
- 4. The Big Idea of Chapter 17 • The change of McCandless’s own joyful arrival at the bus months earlier. He realized that he couldn’t cross the river because he didn’t know the cable crossing that people use to cross Teklanika River when there are huge floods.
- 5. Important Parts of the Chapter • McCandless’s many belongings are still there on the bus such as toiletries, clothes, and books. Gifts: Gallien’s boots & Franz’s machete. Eerie! • The Teklanika River which Chris decided not to cross it, but the author explained that Chris could have crossed it because there is a cable crossing which is used when there are floods. It was one mile from his location!! • Christ had no topographic map which prevented him from locating the cable crossing to cross the river.

Continued • Some critics compared McCandless to Franklin, a 19th-century British naval officer whose arrogance and superiority contributed to 140 deaths, including him after they ended up subsisting on lichens scraped from boulders, singed deer hide, scavenged animal bones, their own boot leather, and finally one another’s flesh.

- 12. Questions????? • Why didn’t Chris bring a topographic map to locate where he could cross the Teklanika River? • Why did Krakauer want to go to where Chris’s dead body was found without companion or follower?

Vocabulary • Heathenism(N): Any of various religions other than Christianity or Judaism or Islamism. • Stampede(N): A situation where a large group of frightened animals, esp. horses or cattle, all run in the same direction. • Claustrophobic(Adj): Small and closed, and makes you feel uncomfortable when you are in it.
