1. MURRYSVILLE HISTORICAL AND PRESERVATION SOCIETY
NOVEMBER 15, 2010 MINUTES
Present: Connie Jelovich, Mary Margaret Galdes, Frank Galdes, Ray Meehan, Vincent
Geiger, Joan Kearns, Herb Gearhard, Lou Intrieri, Carol Intrieri, Jackie Stempfer, Fiore
Benevento, Dorothy Benevento, Jim Pees, Linda Marts, Carl Patty and Sally and Bob
Sciulli (visitors of Linda Marts).
The meeting was started with the pledge of allegiance and a tape provided by Fiore of a
beautifully narrated story of The Grand Old Flag.
This was followed by a demonstration of the proper way to fold the flag by Pete Geiger,
Ray Meehan, Fiore Benevento and Carl Patty while Don Fleming read the meaning of
each fold.
Carl started the meeting by thanking Herb for a great time at his place for our October
meeting.
Minutes were distributed for additions, corrections and approval. Herb informed us no
paper work has been submitted as of yet and Joan noted Helene Smith’s name was
spelled wrong. Jim made and motion and Dot seconded it that the minutes be approved
as corrected.
Connie presented the Treasures report:
Money market: $2,959.96
First Commonwealth: $8,887.88
Discussion followed about possibly moving money to a better interest bearing account,
but decision was made to let everything remain where it is.
Membership:
Carol presented the latest edition of our brochure. It was passed around for
suggestions and/or changes. Fiore made a motion and Pete seconded it to approve the
brochure. Carol will come back to next meeting with cost to produce and a decision will
be made as to how many to order based on cost.
Carol presented an emblem design for approval. Recommendation was made we
give them to new members as well as approach businesses to display them in their
windows to promote the Society as well as becoming a business member. Further action
was tabled till be determine cost of production.
Joan mentioned we only have 1 copy left of Chuck Halls first book and discussion
followed regarding ordering more. Jim made a motion and Fiore seconded it to purchase
25 more.
2. Carol presented the possibility of a having float/wagon representing the Society for the
Murrsville’s Night of Lights and lighting of the tree parade December 3. Discussion
followed and Herb recommended we have a pick-up truck with our sign on it. Jim Pees
is to be St. Nicholas, and Mary Margaret, Carol, Lou and Carl will also represent us in
the truck. Suggestion was made for Jim to throw gold chocolate covered coins like St.
Nicholas did in the past.
Carol asked if the society would be interested in having a Cats Meow of Staymates made
for sale. The group decided against it.
Discussion of having a business card made was brought up and tabled till we have a
prototype and cost. Suggestion was made that possibly the arch from the Bossart House
would be appropriate to include on the sample.
Carl stated the state flag has not yet been put up. Also the grain bin and dry sink are in
the barn at Staymates.
The same article was printed in this issue of the Nut Shell as last issue. Ask Chuck Hall
if he would write a new one for the next issue.
Discuss regarding a fall festival for 2011 resulted in no firm decision. Mary Margaret
and Jim made a motion that further research is needed as to when, where and amount of
involvement before a decision can be made.
A web site for the Society was suggested and Herb made a motion and Mary Margaret
seconded to look into the possibility. Jim will ask his daughter as well as Mary Margaret
will check out her source for cost.
A suggestion was made to form a program committee. Fiore, Lou and Jackie offered to
be on the committee and look into possible speakers and program suggestion.
A decision was made not to have a December meeting. Next meeting will be in January.
Jim made a motion and Fiore seconded to adjourn the meeting.
