Waterway Surveying
Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) use laser scanning
technology combined with a navigation system to scan
highways, waterways, and buildings from a moving vehicle.
StreetMapper is a MMS that is the result of a joint venture
between 3D Laser Mapping and German guidance and
navigation specialist IGI.
Airborne LiDAR is a relatively new land surveying technique,
which is based on high precision laser scanners, the Global
Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS).
Combined, they allow the positioning and orientation of the
footprint of a laser beam as it hits an object, to a high degree of
accuracy.

General Overview
3. Highway Surveys
Typical highway applications include road maintentance, highway
improvement and asset management.
Urban Mapping
Mounted on an automobile, mobile mapping systems can capture laser
data at normal driving speeds, meaning that urban environments can be
mapped in a short amount of time. Combining the laser scan data with
video and photographic imagery enables colour point clouds and 3D
models to be created accurately with realistic texture mapping.
Waterway Surveying
Mobile mapping systems are ideal for coastal mapping, embankment
surveying, and flood defence monitoring.
Forestry
The Riegl LMS range of airborne laser scanners are ideally
suited for forestry applications due to their ability to record
multiple echo returns. This feature enables the measurement
of both the ground surface and canopy structure.
Overhead Line Surveys
The surveying of overhead lines using laser measurement
techniques is becoming widely used for the identification of
low wires, sag measurement and identification of danger
objects.
City Modelling
Airborne laser scanning is being used widely for the capture of
city models for applications ranging from urban planning and
traffic management, to noise protection and flood mapping.
Flood Mapping
Airborne LiDAR is particularly adept at flood mapping due to
the large number of accurately generated points that provide
a wealth of data for flood plain modeling.
Topographical Surveying
Airborne laser scanning is now becoming a reliable and cost
effective technique for topographical surveying. Airborne
LiDAR systems have become a dominant method for the
acquisition of high-precision DEMs and DTMs.
Corridor Mapping
LiDAR is a perfect tool for corridor applications due to its
ability to obtain high-quality data at decimeter-level vertical
accuracy in an unprecedented short turnaround time.
SOLUTIONS :
SiteMonitor Slopes has been developed for periodic or continuous monitoring of unstable highwalls in
open pit mines.
SiteMonitor Volumes has been developed for on-going, periodic measurement of volumes - stockpiles,
cutbacks, and waste dumps.
SiteMonitor Mobile uses the latest mobile laser scanning technology combined with high precision
positioning systems to capture highly accurate and detailed measurements on the move.
APPLICATIONS :
Slope Monitoring Developed in partnership with mining surveyors and geo-techs, SiteMonitor excels in
providing data on the movement of unstable slopes.
Volume Measuring As well as monitoring slopes and structures, SiteMonitor can be employed to measure
volumes in a manual or semi-automatic manner.
SOLUTIONS :
Stop And Go
Stop & Go is a method for collecting accurate high-resolution 3D scan
data using a laser scanner mounted on a portable scanning platform
that can be quickly moved to different locations with the minimum of
effort.
Rapid Mapping
A key feature of the Riegl laser scanners is the ability to mount them
on a vehicle, using roof bars and a shock-absorbing mount.
Combined with an existing GPS system and vehicle, this allows a
range of value-added applications – all of which can be undertaken
by a single operator.

Global Sales and Support Network
Road Maintenance - Sweden
Sweden’s highways have been mapped in 3D using the
laser mapping technology as part of a project led by the
global design, engineering and management
consultancy, WSP. StreetMapper 360 has been used to
capture highly detailed and accurate 3D models of more
than 1,700 km of the road network to support upcoming
rehabilitation projects as well as the design and layout of
new roads by the Swedish Road Administration.
Highway Improvement - Netherland
StreetMapper has also been used to survey a stretch of
four-lane highway in the northern Netherlands without
the need for road closures or other safety precautions.
The millions of individual laser measurements were then
used to prepare a highly detailed and accurate 3D model
for use in the preparation of a new design and actual
laying of the new road surface.
Public Safety - China
StreetMapper was recently used as part of a project to
assess, analyse and manage public safety and security
ahead of the 11th National Games of the Peoples
Republic of China also referred to by some as ‘China’s
Olympics’. For the first time the Public Security
Authorities used LiDAR Mapping and 3D Modelling
Techniques to capture data and produce 3D models in
support of scenario planning and incident simulation.
3dlm Project References
3D Laser Mapping Ltd was established by a group of engineers and
geomatics professionals with considerable experience in the field of
laser surveying and automation technology.
3D Laser Mapping have many years experience in a number of
industries, including:
6 years experience in the LiDAR industry
12 years experience in the mining industry
20 years experience in telecommunications
8 years experience in 3D modeling and animation
Urban Mapping - Bournemouth England
StreetMapper has contributed to a futuristic mapping project in a pilot by
Ordnance Survey to create an incredibly detailed and accurate 3D map of the
English seaside resort of Bournemouth. Ordnance Survey (OS) captured every
square metre of the town centre using a combination of land based laser
scanning - including the StreetMapper 360, and aerial laser surveying. Created
from 700 million individual laser point measurements, the 3D map could
represent the future of mapping and illustrates how the work of the national
mapping agency could change with the adoption of laser scanning
technology.
