Fresh water shortages – 40% of the world (more than 2 billion people) have no access to clean water or sanitation, increasing the spread of disease and risk of epidemics
Ecological footprint – humanity’s consumption of resources exceeds the planet’s capacity for regeneration and recovery by 23%... i.e. it takes more than 1 year for the earth to remake and rebalance resources people use up each year.

Similar trends are at work in housing and transport. Homes are more energy efficient, but this is partly offset by the growth in the floor area. So overall fuel consumption goes up.
In transport, the stock of cars in the EU-27 has been continuously increasing since 1990. And at the same time, kilometres travelled increased at nearly the same pace. As a result, fuel consumption has increased in spite of the fact that cars are more efficient.
More efficient cars, trains and planes are much needed, and it seems that there is some positive development in efficiency gains. But this is only a part of the solution.
