Abstract
An inspection is, most generally, an organized examination or formal
evaluation exercise. In engineering activities inspection involves the
measurements, tests, and gauges applied to certain characteristics in regard to
an object or activity. The results are usually compared to specified requirements
and standards for determining whether the item or activity is in line with these
targets, often with a Standard Inspection Procedure in place to ensure consistent
checking. Inspections are usually non-destructive.
Inspections may be a visual inspection or involve sensing technologies such as
ultrasonic testing, accomplished with a direct physical presence or remotely
such as a remote visual inspection, and manually or automatically such as an
automated optical inspection. Non-contact opticaal measurement and
Photogrammetry have become common NDT methods for inspection of
manufactured components and design optimisation.

CHAPTER1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
An inspection is, most generally, an organized examination or formal evaluation exercise. In
engineering activities inspection involves the measurements, tests, and gauges applied to
certain characteristics in regard to an object or activity. The results are usually compared to
specified requirements and standards for determining whether the item or activity is in line
with these targets, often with a Standard Inspection Procedure in place to ensure consistent
checking. Inspections are usually non-destructive.
Inspections may be a visual inspection or involve sensing technologies such as ultrasonic
testing, accomplished with a direct physical presence or remotely such as a remote visual
inspection, and manually or automatically such as an automated optical inspection. Non-
contact optical measurement and Photogrammetry have become common NDT methods for
inspection of manufactured components and design optimisation.
A 2007 Scottish Government review of scrutiny of public services (the Crear Review,
2007[1]
[1]) defined inspection of public services as "... periodic, targeted scrutiny of specific
services, to check whether they are meeting national and local performance standards,
legislative and professional requirements, and the needs of service users."
A surprise inspection tends to have different results than an announced inspection. Leaders
wanting to know how others in their organization perform can drop in without warning, to
see directly what happens. If an inspection is made known in advance, it can give people a
chance to cover up or to fix mistakes. This could lead to distorted and inaccurate findings. A
surprise inspection, therefore, gives inspectors a better picture of the typical state of the
inspected object or process than an announced inspection. It also enhances external
confidence in the inspection process. See section 4.12 of the Crear report
1.2 Problem Statement
I just only provide safe environment for our employees Because most of accidents result
from a combination of contributing causes and one or more unsafe acts unsafe condition.
In order to improve the overall safety performance we need to inspection the level of the
awareness among the contractors and their employees concerning Safety and Health
matters.
6
1.3 Objectives
1. Our main objective is to prevent incidents like a ,injuries and illnesses.
a. through a critical examination of the workplace.
2. Help to identify and record hazards for corrective action.
3. One of the most important thing that we can aware our employees
a. like a different kind of unsafe act.
CHAPTER2 LITERATURE SURVEY
2.1 History
In 1950‟s, a common definition of occupational health was adopted by the Joint ILO/
World Health Organization (WHO) Committee on Occupational Health as its first
session was revised at its twelfth session in 1995 with the goal of all OSH programs is
to foster a safe work environment. OSH is a basically standard which is set in
legislation that aims to eliminate and reduce hazards at workplace. The OSH primary
focuses on policies that include the compliances with government guidelines,
regulations and laws.
According to Levitt and Samelson (1993), OSH is an interdisciplinary field which
encompasses among the disciplines of industrial hygiene, occupational medicine,
engineering, epidemiology and toxicology that includes the surroundings, related person
and employees‟ condition. OSH involved of all the interactions, which can protect
7
employers, employees and public who are affected by the workplace environment.
This is the one of most important method, and with help of this method we can identify
different kinds of problems easily such as industrial problems business problems etc.and I
just only want such a easily way that people will implement this way in their life and they
can save his lifes and employees and its own self.
2.2 Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
 Equipment problems being detected and receiving maintenance attention before they
escalate into costlier issues.
 Maintenance managers having better information for planning
preventative maintenance.
 recurring equipment problems being identified so that their cause
can be corrected.
 Personnel taking better care of equipment because regular inspection hold them
accountable.
 Procurement of better equipment due to the information being gathered about
equipment durability and performance.
 Site – A check of the site grading & drainage, retaining walls, walkways, driveways,
patios, decks, porches, fencing, gates.
 Structure – An evaluation of the exterior walls, parapets, trim, chimney, foundation,
slabs and basement or crawl space (if applicable).
 Attic/Roof – Review of access provisions, insulation, ventilation, framing, roof
surface, flashing, penetrations, drainage, overhangs, gutters & downspouts.
 Garage – Evaluation of the overhead vehicle door, automatic opener, fire separation.
 Plumbing – A review of the accessible main piping, distribution piping, waste & vent
piping, fuel system, water heater, laundry connection.
8
 Heating/Cooling – A check of the type, condition, distribution/duct system, filters,
thermostat.
 Electrical – Evaluation of the service entrance, system capacity, panels, circuitry,
wiring, outlets & switches.
 Interior– Review of doors, windows, flooring, walls & ceiling, fireplace, closets,
stairs.
 Kitchen – Looking at cabinets & counters, sink, faucet, garbage disposal, dishwasher,
range, oven, some built-in appliances.
 Bathrooms – A check of cabinets & counters, sinks, faucets, tubs, showers, toilets,
ventilation.
Disadvantages
 More money upfront when initially starting a preventative maintenance plan, it will
cost you more to regularly maintain
equipment and the building, than it would be if you waited
for things to simply break down.
 More workers –Preventative maintenance require more workers
because regular checks are a must. When compared to reactive
maintenance you simply need to call someone in for a onetime fix.
Instead this method requires workers to always be on site and
perform daily works.
 It is important to remember that the capital expenditure on advanced NDT
equipment is not the only cost. Instrument maintenance incurs a further cost, as
does depreciation. Capital purchases will typically be written off in the company
accounts over a 3 year period, which means that this equipment must generate
9
substantial profit for a return on that investment. Also, there are borrowing and
opportunity costs - the money used in equipment purchase or to pay interest could
have been used for something else, such as training or hiring more staff.
 In comparison with conventional methods the operation of advanced
instrumentation requires a higher level of training and additional certification,
which incurs more costs. However, as discussed above, the deployment of
advanced NDT delivers a superior, and therefore higher £value service. Once
advanced training is completed, as with any skill, it is important to practise what
was learned on the training course. This can only be done if high-value advanced
instrumentation is available. Again, purchase costs may be preclusive, so renting
can be a preferable option.
 In addition, instrument purchase ties the user to a specific technology, whereas a
rental fleet offers users the ability to deploy the most appropriate kit for each job, or
to hire equipment from different manufacturers depending on the users’ training,
experience and preference.

  • 3. iii Abstract An inspection is, most generally, an organized examination or formal evaluation exercise. In engineering activities inspection involves the measurements, tests, and gauges applied to certain characteristics in regard to an object or activity. The results are usually compared to specified requirements and standards for determining whether the item or activity is in line with these targets, often with a Standard Inspection Procedure in place to ensure consistent checking. Inspections are usually non-destructive. Inspections may be a visual inspection or involve sensing technologies such as ultrasonic testing, accomplished with a direct physical presence or remotely such as a remote visual inspection, and manually or automatically such as an automated optical inspection. Non-contact opticaal measurement and Photogrammetry have become common NDT methods for inspection of manufactured components and design optimisation. Keywords: 1. Ultrasonic testing 2. Optical inspection 3. Measurements 4. Examination 5. Inspection

  • 5. 5 CHAPTER1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background An inspection is, most generally, an organized examination or formal evaluation exercise. Non- contact optical measurement and Photogrammetry have become common NDT methods for inspection of manufactured components and design optimisation. A 2007 Scottish Government review of scrutiny of public services (the Crear Review, 2007[1] [1]) defined inspection of public services as "... periodic, targeted scrutiny of specific services, to check whether they are meeting national and local performance standards, legislative and professional requirements, and the needs of service users." A surprise inspection tends to have different results than an announced inspection. Leaders wanting to know how others in their organization perform can drop in without warning, to see directly what happens. If an inspection is made known in advance, it can give people a chance to cover up or to fix mistakes. This could lead to distorted and inaccurate findings. A surprise inspection, therefore, gives inspectors a better picture of the typical state of the inspected object or process than an announced inspection. It also enhances external confidence in the inspection process. See section 4.12 of the Crear report 1.2 Problem Statement I just only provide safe environment for our employees Because most of accidents result from a combination of contributing causes and one or more unsafe acts unsafe condition. In order to improve the overall safety performance we need to inspection the level of the awareness among the contractors and their employees concerning Safety and Health matters.
  • 6. 6 1.3 Objectives 1. Our main objective is to prevent incidents like a ,injuries and illnesses. a. through a critical examination of the workplace. 2. Help to identify and record hazards for corrective action. 3. One of the most important thing that we can aware our employees a. like a different kind of unsafe act. CHAPTER2 LITERATURE SURVEY 2.1 History In 1950‟s, a common definition of occupational health was adopted by the Joint ILO/ World Health Organization (WHO) Committee on Occupational Health as its first session was revised at its twelfth session in 1995 with the goal of all OSH programs is to foster a safe work environment. OSH is a basically standard which is set in legislation that aims to eliminate and reduce hazards at workplace. The OSH primary focuses on policies that include the compliances with government guidelines, regulations and laws. According to Levitt and Samelson (1993), OSH is an interdisciplinary field which encompasses among the disciplines of industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, engineering, epidemiology and toxicology that includes the surroundings, related person and employees‟ condition. OSH involved of all the interactions, which can protect
  • 7. 7 employers, employees and public who are affected by the workplace environment. This is the one of most important method, and with help of this method we can identify different kinds of problems easily such as industrial problems business problems etc.and I just only want such a easily way that people will implement this way in their life and they can save his lifes and employees and its own self. 2.2 Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages  Equipment problems being detected and receiving maintenance attention before they escalate into costlier issues.  Maintenance managers having better information for planning preventative maintenance.  recurring equipment problems being identified so that their cause can be corrected.  Personnel taking better care of equipment because regular inspection hold them accountable.  Procurement of better equipment due to the information being gathered about equipment durability and performance.  Site – A check of the site grading & drainage, retaining walls, walkways, driveways, patios, decks, porches, fencing, gates.  Structure – An evaluation of the exterior walls, parapets, trim, chimney, foundation, slabs and basement or crawl space (if applicable).  Attic/Roof – Review of access provisions, insulation, ventilation, framing, roof surface, flashing, penetrations, drainage, overhangs, gutters & downspouts.  Garage – Evaluation of the overhead vehicle door, automatic opener, fire separation.  Plumbing – A review of the accessible main piping, distribution piping, waste & vent piping, fuel system, water heater, laundry connection.
  • 8. 8  Heating/Cooling – A check of the type, condition, distribution/duct system, filters, thermostat.  Electrical – Evaluation of the service entrance, system capacity, panels, circuitry, wiring, outlets & switches.  Interior– Review of doors, windows, flooring, walls & ceiling, fireplace, closets, stairs.  Kitchen – Looking at cabinets & counters, sink, faucet, garbage disposal, dishwasher, range, oven, some built-in appliances.  Bathrooms – A check of cabinets & counters, sinks, faucets, tubs, showers, toilets, ventilation. Disadvantages  More money upfront when initially starting a preventative maintenance plan, it will cost you more to regularly maintain equipment and the building, than it would be if you waited for things to simply break down.  More workers –Preventative maintenance require more workers because regular checks are a must. When compared to reactive maintenance you simply need to call someone in for a onetime fix. Instead this method requires workers to always be on site and perform daily works.  It is important to remember that the capital expenditure on advanced NDT equipment is not the only cost. Instrument maintenance incurs a further cost, as does depreciation. Capital purchases will typically be written off in the company accounts over a 3 year period, which means that this equipment must generate
  • 9. 9 substantial profit for a return on that investment. Also, there are borrowing and opportunity costs - the money used in equipment purchase or to pay interest could have been used for something else, such as training or hiring more staff.  In comparison with conventional methods the operation of advanced instrumentation requires a higher level of training and additional certification, which incurs more costs. However, as discussed above, the deployment of advanced NDT delivers a superior, and therefore higher £value service. Once advanced training is completed, as with any skill, it is important to practise what was learned on the training course. This can only be done if high-value advanced instrumentation is available. Again, purchase costs may be preclusive, so renting can be a preferable option.  In addition, instrument purchase ties the user to a specific technology, whereas a rental fleet offers users the ability to deploy the most appropriate kit for each job, or to hire equipment from different manufacturers depending on the users’ training, experience and preference.
