EXPLANATION
In the Philippines, red-tagging is already rampant, and it is pretty normalized by
a considerable margin of people. At the same time, most of them are ignorant
of the harmful effects of the latter on their fellow citizens who exercise their
freedom of speech. Human rights are at stake in those at the receiving end;
however, this law could also potentially affect the rights of those at practice
since a proportion of them are only wary of rebellion or terrorism.
The main goal of this law is to eradicate the reckless use of red-tagging. In
many social media platforms, it is evident that some users abuse their freedom
to label people as members of a rebel group like the CPP-NPA-NDF. Even
politicians or those with knowledge have the gut to engage in red-tagging, and
its intention could be of personal or political agenda. Regardless of its reason,
recklessly labeling people could cause actual tragedies since those in authority
could use this as either proof or justice that one is indeed a danger to the
community.
This law would solve the problem since sanctions are present to those who
violate them. The severity of the punishment could differ from one another; this
plays an important role in protecting the rights of both parties. Since red-
tagging is mainly present in the online community, the sanctions could be
imprisonment or community service with the presence of education. The only
way to totally stop this is with awareness since punishment alone is not
productive.
