Generation in computer terminology is a change in technogy a
computer is/was being used.
1st generation
2nd generation
3rd generation
4th generation
5th generation
4. First generation of computer
Eckert and Mauchly developed the first electronic computer.
The time period of first generation of computer was from 1946-
1959.
Vacuum-tube was the core element in the first generation of
computer .
Punch-cord and paper tape was secondery storage.
Limited internal storage capacity ,large amout of heat produce.
It is not portable and machine cord was used a programming.
Example: IBM 650,IBM 701
5. Second generation of computer
Shockley developed the second generation of computer.
The time period of second generation of computer was 1959-
1965.
Transistor replace vacuum tube in a second generation of
computer.
Tapes and magnetic disk was used for secondary storage.
Magnetic core was used for primary storage.
Example:PDP-8,IBM7090
6. Third generation of computer
Jack kilby developed the third generation of computer.
The time period of third generation of computer 1965-1971.
Integrated circuits(IC) was the core in third generation.
Megnatic disk was used for secondary storage.
Development of minicomputer and require less power ,less
heat.

Federico feign developed fourth generation of computer.
The time period of fourth generation of computer was 1971-
1985.
Very large scale integrated circiuts (VLSI).
Sami conductor were used for primary storage.
High level languege like C C++,used in this generation.
Examle:DEC 10,STAR 1000.
8. Fifth generation of computer
Ehud shapiro developed the fifth generation of computer.
The period of the fifth generation of computer 1985- Till date.
Ultra large scale integration (ULSI) is the core element.
Ram and Rom is used for primary storage.
All high language like C,C++,java used in this generation.
Examle: Desktop, laptops, tablets
