Unseen Poetry
45 mins in the exam (same in y11)
How to start each paragraph/what to include:
You need to take about three quotes.
One from the start. At/ Near the start of the poem, the writer…
One from the middle. As the poem develops, the writer…
One from the end. At/Near the end, the writer…
Say how it makes the reader feel and select any techniques or words/punctuation that stands out.
For an A = try to make links to the rest of the poem. Are there any patterns?
Timing:
15 minutes to select key words and quotes that interest you
30 minutes to write it (3 normal sized paragraphs is fine)
Easiest techniques:
Anything that can end in ing or ed = verb
Plosive – hard sound and sibilant – soft sounding = might make it feel angry or sad etc… (they effect the
tone/mood)
Mono-syllabic word/s – one beat word/s. Direct. Final.
Colloquial language – everyday speech. Sounds more realistic.
Metaphor – something compared to something else. The sun is a golden chest.
Person Is it in first person ‘I’ / ‘We’
Second person ‘You’
Third person ‘he/She/They a name’
Why?
1st person = more personal and intimate, second is more accusatory or conversational and third is more
distant or factual? Like an observer?
Rhyme? Regular or not? Why? Which words are being pulled together and why?
