Targets from Y12 essay 1 on ‘Salome’
A. Use technical terms
B. Write the title properly – ‘The World’s Wife’ or ‘Salome’
C. Understand the meanings of key words in the question – ‘joyous’ and ‘wit’
and use synonyms for these as you answer to show you are answering the
question
D. Use clear topic sentences at the start of each paragraph to give your essay
clear direction
E. Establish an argument in the introduction and introduce ‘big ideas’ –
don’t be general or vague and avoid re-wording the question
F. Avoid using ‘I’ in formal writing
G. Make specific links
H. Analyse the language, structure and form in the poem. Dissect quotes and
make links to L/S/F in the rest of the poem and the collection
I. Give multiple interpretations
J. Do independent research around the poem and the character in the poem
to ensure that you understand the poem (use the ‘York Notes’ as
recommended in the summer reading and the internet)
K. Try and link your paragraphs so the points lead on from one to the next
L. Use the writer’s name (Duffy) – the poem can’t ‘do’ anything.
M. Avoid using the word ‘quote’ in your essay
N. Deal with the whole poem (not small quotes in isolation) and also make
links to other poems in the collection
O. Develop ideas and think outside the box/beyond the obvious
P. Introduce your quote – put in the context within the poem
