2. THE YOUNG BUCHANAN
James Buchanan Jr. was born April
23,1791 in Cove Gap Pennsylvania.
Buchanan attended school in
Mercersburg before entering
Dickenson college as a junior in
the fall of 1807. Buchanan was
among the best scholars in his
class.
3. PRESIDENT BUCHANAN
On March 4th, 1857 James
Buchanan Jr. became the 15th
president of the united states.
Buchanan was a democrat and
serving by his side was vice
president John C. Breckinridge.
One of his goal’s was to
strengthen the democratic
party.
4. THE DEATH OF BUCHANAN
On March 1861 he retired from
office and moved to his Wheatland
in Pennsylvania. Seven years later
on June 1, 1868 James Buchanan Jr.
died in Lancaster.

•James Buchanan’s nick name
was the “Old Buck”.
•Buchanan didn’t have any kids
and was the only president who
never married.
•The white house hostess was his
niece Harriet Lane.
•First president to send a
transatlantic telegram to Queen
Victoria of Great Britain.
