An optical communication system consists of a transmitter that converts an electrical signal to an optical signal, optical fiber that carries the optical signal over long distances, and an optical receiver that converts the optical signal back to an electrical signal. An optical regenerator may be included to boost the power of the optical signal along the fiber.
