7. Scientific Research
“Satoskar et al examined the effects of curcumin compared to
phenylbutazone or placebo for spermatic cord edema after
surgery for inguinal hernia or hydrocele. Forty-five patients (ages
15-68) received 400 mg curcumin (Group A), 250 mg lactose
power placebo (Group B), or 100 mg phenylbutazone (Group C)
three times daily for six days post-operatively Parameters
measured were spematic cord edema, spermatic cord tenderness
(0:absent, 1:mild, 2:moderate, 3:severe) and reflected by
intensity score (TIS) of 0-12. TIS on day 6 decreased I Group A
(Curcumin) 84.2 percent, by 61.8 percent in Group B (placebo),
and by 86 percent in Group C (Phenylbutzone). Although TIS
scored for curcumin and pheylbutazone were similar on day 6,
curcumin proved to be superior by reducing all four parameters of
inflammation. Phenylbutazone did not reduce tenderness at the
operative site.”
