Ama one sheet-2
1. AMAs on reddit
AMAs were created by the reddit community a few years ago as an opportunity for interesting individuals to
take questions about anything and everything - hence the title "AMA" (for "Ask Me Anything"). As more high
profile individuals started to use the service- from Snoop Lion to Mark Cuban to Stephen Colbert - AMAs
have become more and more popular, and more high-profile individuals as well as community members
are participating in them as a result.
AMAs can vary in terms of format - from text, to video - or even in terms of the types of questions that are
answered (like "AMAA", which stands for "Ask me ALMOST anything" or "AUAA" - "Ask Us Almost Anything"
for a group).
During the course of an AMA, the person who will be answering questions during the AMA will typically
submit their thread on www.reddit.com/r/iama. This thread will include a title (i.e. "I am David Hunter-Wallis,
actor and author of THE ROCKSTAR WITHIN - AMA") and thread text ("Hi reddit, my name is David and
you may have seen my work in TIGER HUNTER, NINJAS OF THE SKY or read my book THE ROCKSTAR
WITHIN. I'm looking forward to answering your questions!").
Once the thread is submitted to reddit, it gets its own unique link that can be shared and tracked, and that
can redirect people to visit the AMA so others can tweet it, share it on social media, etc. In a recent
example, Ethan Hawke’s AMA had 6.8M unique US viewers on reddit (9.6M global) in 24 hours, with press
coverage that generated more than additional 10M US / 15M global uniques.
As part of starting the AMA, the AMA moderators will want to verify that it's indeed the actual person doing
the AMA - this is done in a variety of ways by including a photo, video, or tweeting from a verified
social media account and then embedding that link in the AMA. Then for the next two hours (or however
long the person conducting the AMA has set aside) they are going to want to continue refreshing the
thread and hitting the "reply" button to type out their replies to various questions as they are submitted by
reddit users, then clicking 'save' when they're done answering an individual question. When the AMA
answerer has run out of time, they usually write an "outro" to let reddit community members know that
they're done answering questions and to let people know whether they'll be able to come back to answer
any questions later!
