3. Founded by actor Gary Sinise, The Gary Sinise
Foundation is committed to honoring
veterans, defenders, their families, and those in
need through its many programs that educate
and build communities. In 2011, the Gary Sinise
Foundation partnered with the Tunnel to Towers
Foundation and began their “Building for
America’s Bravest” program. This program
constructs custom Smart Homes for veterans who
have been severely wounded. The hope of this
program was to build homes that would restore
the independence of wounded veterans.
4. Recently, The Gary Sinise Foundation and the
Tunnel to Towers Foundations announced the 12
veterans who would receive these Smart Homes.
Each veteran was able to decide where the house
was built. The homes cost around $500,000 each
to build and, depending on each veteran’s
need, include automated lighting, heating, and
air-conditioning. Each Smart Home also offers
retractable shelving, cabinets, and cook tops;
elevators and roll-in bathrooms; intercom
systems; automated doors; and window
treatments that can be controlled with an iPad.
