2. Introduction
An academic leader with experience teaching in and leading a variety of
schools, Morgan Barth recently served as the principal of Achievement
First Amistad High School, a public-charter institution in Connecticut.
Previously, Morgan Barth held such roles as principal of Achievement
First Elm City College Prep Elementary and regional superintendent of
several Achievement First elementary and middle schools.
A college preparatory school, Achievement First (AF) Amistad High
School leverages high expectations and rigorous courses toward the
goal of helping 100 percent of its students earn acceptance to 4-year
universities or colleges. Beyond offering courses in such subjects as
Spanish, literature, science, math, and the arts, AF Amistad High School
maintains several programs that promote an enriching student life,
including its service learning requirements.
Before graduation, all AF Amistad High School students must complete
40 hours of service. These hours must all be tracked and logged with
the school in order to count.
3. Community Service
Further, the service cannot be done as restitution to either the
community or the school, and only 10 service learning hours completed
at an organization within the Achievement First network will count
towards this graduation requirement.
So that students are not overwhelmed by balancing their schoolwork,
service learning hours, and other responsibilities, it’s recommended that
they divide their service learning requirements across their 4 years of
schooling. This means they only need to complete 10 community
service hours a year for the 4 years prior to graduation.
Most students value their community service as a way to learn about
their community, to show leadership and to give back. Morgan Barth
has always believed that community service is an important component
of character education and college readiness.
