A history of sustainable growth
Like the company itself, the name ‘Mondi’ also has its origins in South Africa and comes
from ‘Mondia whitei’, a flower that grows in the hills near Durban, where the first paper
mill was located. To recognise Mondi’s commitment to the environment, the name ‘Mondi’
was chosen.

positioned through our EcoSolutions to offer a range of high-performance, high-tech paper-based,
flexible plastic and hybrid solutions.
We know that for many applications our high-quality paper packaging is the best choice.
High-tech flexible plastic, which uses around 70% less material than rigid plastic, and innovative
plastic-paper combinations can provide essential functionality that is difficult to replicate.

In 2017 we extended our global Partnership with WWF
by another three years.
We are continuing to focus on stewardship of forests,
forest plantations, climate, energy and freshwater – both
in our own operations and through engaging others.
To meet customer needs and at the same time reduce our
impact on the environment, we are tackling three of
today’s biggest challenges: deforestation, water scarcity
and climate change.
Partnership for a sustainable future

● Mondi joined the WWF Climate Savers programme in 2018. The Climate Savers
programme is WWF’s global platform to engage businesses and industries on
climate and energy. We are working towards setting long-term GHG targets using
science-based methodology.
● We continued to work with WWF and other New Generation Plantations (NGP)
platform participants to help expand the use of the concept to other forest types
and agriculture. We supported WWF to develop and champion the WWF Boreal
Forest Platform (WWF-BFP) in Russia.
● We have supported the development of the WWF Water Risk Filter and are
currently testing the revised Water Risk Filter tool 5.0 at our pulp and paper mills to
categorise the water risk of our operations. Through this collaboration we have
increased our understanding of current and potential future water impacts, as well
as potential risks to our business related to water availability, allocation and costs.

Global initiatives
● With WWF South Africa we continued to promote water stewardship using a
landscape approach that focuses on wetlands and freshwater.
● Together with WWF we participated in a ‘joint control measures’ pilot project in
Slovakia to identify practical solutions to mitigate risks identified in wood supply
chains and thereby ensure compliance with the new FSC Controlled Wood
standard and the country’s National Risk Assessment.
● In 2017 we signed an agreement with WWF Russia and the local NGO Silver Taiga
Foundation to protect the cores of intact forest landscapes in the Komi Republic
and adjacent territories. It is the first landscape-level agreement to depict core
areas beyond boundaries or forest management units.

Becoming a signatory to this Global Commitment in October 2018, Mondi has committed to:
● Achieve the target of 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging by 2025
● Take action to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging by 2025
● Take action to move from single-use towards reuse models where relevant by 2025
● Collaborate towards increasing reuse/recycling/composting rates for plastics
● Set an ambitious 2025 recycled content target across all plastic packaging used
o For Mondi this target is to include where possible 25% recycled content by 2025
(where it does not compromise functionality or food health requirements).
We believe it is essential for us to drive innovation and broad systemic change throughout
the plastics value chain and we are looking for more partners who want to join forces in this
area to find a solution for plastic waste.

  • 49. ● Mondi joined the WWF Climate Savers programme in 2018. The Climate Savers programme is WWF’s global platform to engage businesses and industries on climate and energy. We are working towards setting long-term GHG targets using science-based methodology. ● We continued to work with WWF and other New Generation Plantations (NGP) platform participants to help expand the use of the concept to other forest types and agriculture. We supported WWF to develop and champion the WWF Boreal Forest Platform (WWF-BFP) in Russia. ● We have supported the development of the WWF Water Risk Filter and are currently testing the revised Water Risk Filter tool 5.0 at our pulp and paper mills to categorise the water risk of our operations. Through this collaboration we have increased our understanding of current and potential future water impacts, as well as potential risks to our business related to water availability, allocation and costs.   • 50. ● With WWF South Africa we continued to promote water stewardship using a landscape approach that focuses on wetlands and freshwater. ● Together with WWF we participated in a ‘joint control measures’ pilot project in Slovakia to identify practical solutions to mitigate risks identified in wood supply chains and thereby ensure compliance with the new FSC Controlled Wood standard and the country’s National Risk Assessment. ● In 2017 we signed an agreement with WWF Russia and the local NGO Silver Taiga Foundation to protect the cores of intact forest landscapes in the Komi Republic and adjacent territories. It is the first landscape-level agreement to depict core areas beyond boundaries or forest management units. Mondi signs the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment March 2019Group presentation 51 Becoming a signatory to this Global Commitment in October 2018, Mondi has committed to: ● Achieve the target of 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging by 2025 ● Take action to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging by 2025 ● Take action to move from single-use towards reuse models where relevant by 2025 ● Collaborate towards increasing reuse/recycling/composting rates for plastics ● Set an ambitious 2025 recycled content target across all plastic packaging used o For Mondi this target is to include where possible 25% recycled content by 2025 (where it does not compromise functionality or food health requirements). We believe it is essential for us to drive innovation and broad systemic change throughout the plastics value chain and we are looking for more partners who want to join forces in this area to find a solution for plastic waste.
