1. MBA - Full Time
Course structure
The total duration of study is 16 months or 4 semesters. Each semester has duration of 12 weeks.
There will be three such semesters within an academic year. Courses will generally be conducted
on weekday evenings (6.30 p.m. – 10.15 p.m.) with each course having a 3 ½ hour lecture per
week. Examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester and will be followed by an
inter-semester break.
Students are expected to take 4 courses per semester in the first 3 semesters. In the final
semester, students are required to take 3 core courses and either completes a project paper related
to their area of specialization (3 credit hours) or to take 1 elective course in lieu of the project
paper.
The programme now has four areas of specialization:
i. General Management
ii. Strategic Management
iii. Finance
iv. Islamic Banking and Finance
Eleven of the sixteen courses are common to all areas of specialization. Each area of
specialization has four specialization courses relevant to the respective subject area.
The project paper will be in the area of specialization of the student, and will be supervised by a
member of the teaching faculty. Candidates will be expected to submit a short written proposal
of their intended research topic towards the end of the third semester (i.e. upon completion of
their respective four specialized courses). The final project paper will be due for submission at
the end of the final semester or a subsequent date as determined by the Project Paper Committee.

Course Descriptions
Managing Corporate Resources
This course introduces students to management of corporate resources. It describes how
managers organize and manage human and other resources. This covers key management
activities such as planning, designing organizations, developing controls and decision-making. In
addition, behavioral topics like theory and practice of management, leadership and group
dynamics will also be addressed.
Financial and Managerial Accounting
The course provides an overview of Financial and Managerial Accounting. The accounting
function and how it fits into the corporations’ overall organization and objective will be
emphasized. Topics covered include understanding financial statements, classification of costs,
break even analysis, cost-volume profit relationships, basics of budgeting, variance analysis and
accounting information systems.
Marketing Management
The course builds an in-depth understanding of basic marketing concepts and their application. It
provides working knowledge of the tools of marketing product, pricing and promotion policies.
Distribution, channel building and consumer behavior will also be covered. Additionally, issues
in international marketing and marketing research will also be addressed.
Business Economics
This course covers the area of managerial economics. Issues in applied economics like business
cycles, inflation, exchange rates and microeconomics will be emphasized. Economic paradigms
4. of the behaviour of individuals and firms and their interaction with the overall economic
environment will be the focus.
Quantitative Decision Making
The course provides the framework for quantitative decision making. It examines conditions
under which quantitative techniques may be applied to making managerial decisions. Topics
covered include probability concepts, statistical estimation and hypothesis testing, regression and
correlation analysis, ANOVA, non-parametric statistics and optimization techniques.
Managerial Finance
The course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and theories of
financial management. Time value of money, capital budgeting basics, capital structure,
managing short and long-term assets etc. will be the emphasis. Islamic financing techniques like
mudharabah and musyarakah will also be introduced. This course is structured to provide both a
foundation for further specialization in Finance and a standalone course for candidates intending
to major in either one of the four areas of specialization.
Management Information Systems (MIS)
This course provides an integrated framework combining the technical aspects of MIS with the
problems of managing complex organizations. The course highlights issues and problem-solving
approaches that are important to managing MIS projects and organizations. In addition, the
initial stages of the system development process including requirement collection, specification
and needs analysis will also be dealt with.
Operations Management
This course will focus on the design and control of manufacturing and service systems. The
underlying premise is that goods and services should be produced in the right quantity and at the
appropriate time and cost. Topics include process analysis, capacity planning, forecasting,
simulation, inventory analysis, quality control procedures, scheduling models, materials
planning, critical paths, simplex and compound models and management of technology.
Business Law
The structure of the course will consists of the legal environment in which businesses operates. It
will begin by acquainting the student with the Legal System including dispute settlement by
litigation and alternative dispute resolution methods. The students will be grounded in the
fundamental principles of contract law, after which he will be exposed the essential elements of
business torts, including Tort of negligence and premises liability. They will thereafter be
grounded further in the law, especially relevant to their occupations, namely sale of the goods,
including international trade, hire-purchase, insurance, agency partnership, and negotiable
instruments including cheques. The will also be briefly exposed to the principles of intellectual
property and cyber law under economic torts.
Human Resource Management (HRM)
The course emphasizes the management of a corporation’s most important asset – its people.
Provides an overall framework for managing people with specific emphasis on the challenges of
HRM, human resources planning, recruitment and selection, development, evaluation and
5. performance appraisal. Issues like employee motivation and satisfaction and compensation
administration will also be addressed.
Organizational Behavior
This course provides students the framework and tools to analyze behavioral issues in
organizations. This includes developing an understanding of behaviors at individuals, group and
organizational levels. The emphasis in this course is the use of these framework and tools in
solving behavioral problems. The teaching of this course relies heavily on cases.
International Business
The course examines how the social, economic and political environments in different countries
can affect the international competitiveness of a firm. It will examine how these will impact
appropriate business strategy, and how to anticipate and minimize the impact of adverse changes
in international conditions. Related topics like the formation of regional blocks and their
potential impact on global trade dynamics will also be addressed.
Management Policy and Corporate Strategy
The course focuses on the formulation and effective implementation of corporate policies and
strategy. The importance and challenges of designing an appropriate strategy in today’s complex
and constantly changing macro-environment will be highlighted. Topics covered include
problem strategic analysis, the strategy formulation process, competitive approaches and issues
in strategy implementation.
Portfolio Management
This course analyses the area of portfolio management. It introduces organized securities
markets and exchanges and the valuation of stocks and fixed income securities. It discusses
problems and models of portfolio analysis and management. It examines in detail risk-return
trade-offs, the Markowitz model, modern portfolio theory and capital asset pricing model,
arbitrage pricing theory, duration and gap analysis and techniques for evaluating the performance
of fund managers.
International Finance
This course examines financial management in an international context. It introduces foreign
exchange markets, parity conditions, currency exposures and hedging techniques. It also
examines issues in international investments, evaluating foreign projects, estimating cost of
foreign funds, and other related topics like Eurodollar, Eurobond and Asiadollar markets,
currency swaps, etc.
Managing Risks With Futures and Options
This course is designed to provide students with a good working knowledge of how to
analyze/isolate risk and its management. It will revolve around the use of financial derivatives
instruments such as futures and options in modern day risk management. The course will cover
the institutional details, theoretical foundation and the practical aspects of financial derivatives.
Instruments like SWAPS and Forward Rate Agreement will also be included.
6. Financial Planning and Strategy
A case-oriented course that examines in-depth financial planning and financial strategy. It
addresses several applied issues in finance. These include estimating short and long-term funding
requirements, financing strategies, mergers and acquisitions, investment decision making, project
evaluation, valuation of the firm and growth strategies. In addition, topics of interest like,
leveraged buyouts, management buyouts, cost of capital and capital structure and issues in
Islamic financing will also be covered.
Financial Analysis For Decision Making
The course is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of financial
information by analyzing and interpreting financial information to aid management decision-
making. The financial information used would include standard financial statements (e.g.
Annual, Quarterly reports etc) as well as such other data as are made available via a company’s
financial information system and internal non-financial information.
Comparative Business Ethics
This course intends to create an ethical awareness as well as a morally reflective mindset in
potential senior managers. It deals with ethical issues facing managers in performing their roles
given the different spheres of influence and responsibility impinging on them. Analysis of issues
will be made on a comparative basis in cognizance of different core values, and worldviews from
which ethical standards and principles are derived. This course also aims at introducing
guidelines that can assist managers to reorganize and anticipate the ethical implications of their
decisions in a competitive environment.
Telecommunications and Networking for Managers
The purpose of this course is to provide MBA students with an understanding of the key
technical and managerial issues in the effective development and use of telecommunications by
organizations. Discussion of technology will be set in the context of applications, particularly
those emphasizing inter-organizational coordination and service delivery. Topics covered will
include basic concepts of telecommunication & technology, internet and intranet technologies,
issues related to the operational and strategic use of the technology, and the changing structure of
the telecommunications industry. The prerequisite for this course is Management Information
Systems.
Corporate IT Management
This course has been specially designed for people with sufficient practical managerial
experience, occupying or expected to occupy a managerial position in their organizations. It is
aimed at improving management and planning of Information Technology (IT) at the corporate
level. Although participants will be provided with basic knowledge of IT, more emphasis will be
laid on the efficient use and appropriateness of IT in various situations in a corporation.
Database Management
This course provides a thorough background in database concepts, as well as practical
information on database systems design. It examines the logical organization of databases : the
entity-relationship model, the hierarchical, network, and relational data models and their
7. languages, functional dependencies and normal forms, design implementation, and optimization
of query languages, security and integrity, concurrency control, and distributed database systems.
Systems Analysis and Design For Managers
This course introduces students to the concepts and methods of systems analysis and design. As
organizations move to re-engineer processes to take advantage of advances in information
technology, the need to develop and deliver an error-free complex system becomes critical.
However, it is well-known that the delivery of such systems is generally prone to cost over-runs,
delayed delivery, and of systems that do not meet user needs. The course focuses on various
methodologies that will help minimize these problems. The conceptual issues involved include
project management, planning for, and analyzing systems opportunities with the IS function and
the user community, design approaches, implementation methods to insure timely and correct
delivery of the systems, and the operations and maintenance functions of the delivered system.
Fiqh Al Muamalah in Banking and Finance
A comparison is made between common law or statutory law and fiqh al mu’amalah in banking
and financial practices. The important elements of the form and content of the various
mu’amalah contracts and their relevant applications in banking as well as financial markets are
discussed. The importance and role of Shari’ah regulatory bodies in financial activities are
discussed. Contemporary issues in the development of fiqh al mu’amalah in addressing Islamic
banking matters will be expounded on based on the experience of international Islamic financial
institutions.
Islamic Financial System and Environment
The course provides an overview of the Malaysian financial system including its institutions,
markets, products and its legal framework. The role of Islamic banking in Malaysia as well as
other countries will also be discussed. Discussions will focus on the institutions and regulations
of the financial environment. The types of Islamic financial operations and their related facilities
will be explained. Current issues affecting the Islamic financial system including asset liability
management are also addressed.
Accounting & Control of Islamic Financial Institutions
This course provides an overview of the accounting framework, standards and practices of
Islamic banks. A conceptual framework for the reporting of Islamic financial institutions is
discussed. The accounting treatments of various Islamic financial transactions and the
importance of Islamic financial reporting, regulations and audit practices are discussed. Issues on
accounting policies for measurement and distribution will be highlighted. A financial analysis of
Islamic financial institutions will be conducted. Other related areas like zakat accounting and
factors affecting Islamic financial reporting will also be treated.
Al-Shari’ah, Economics and Society
The course introduces the important of the Shari `ah as the source (usul) and methodology of
Islamic law as well as its influence on banking and financial practices. The conceptual
framework and the philosophical foundations of the Islamic worldview and Islamic economics
will then be discussed within the context of the Shari’ah. A general discussion of the Islamic
economic systems will also expose students to the understanding of Islamic economics. An
8. introduction to the immutable ethical values will then be used to analyze the different views of
ethical conduct and dilemmas facing the profession and the industry.
Management Control Systems
Organizations need effective control systems to lead them towards their goals and objectives.
Designing and implementing effective planning and control systems is essential to successful
management. The focus of the course will be on the environment in which management control
takes place and the sequential steps in a typical management control process at all levels
including strategic planning, budgeting and operations. The course will be conducted in the form
of lectures, class exercises, case problems, and seminars.
Organizational Change Development
Change and complexity is said to a permanent feature faced by many organizations today.
Organizations have to respond to this reality by constantly improving themselves and
occasionally reinventing their business models. This includes introducing quality programme,
restructuring, strategic repositioning and strategic turnaround. Yet, many managers are ill
equipped to manage these transformations. As such we see many failures in organizational
adjustments.
Advanced Strategic Management
The objective of this course is to develop the ability to synthesize corporate level issues into a
strategy. Particular emphasis will be given on the ability to gather and analyze information for
the purpose of strategic scanning and sense making. These skills will help students equip
themselves with advanced skills in performing corporate strategic planning.

This course evaluates and analyzes issues on the international trade and development with the
hope that students will be prepared to face future complexities of the world economy.
Innovation and Technology Management (MGT 6254)
The knowledge economy requires that organizations develop the ability to expand the frontiers
of knowledge as part of their value creation activities. This require that organizations develop the
ability to tap into the knowledge of its human resource and put in place the processes to translate
ideas into products and ultimately commercialize these products. This course will address how to
develop these processes. The content of this course will include the design of innovative systems,
commercialization of high-tech products, technology planning and examining the role of regional
clusters in developing and marketing new technologies.
Managerial Communication (MGT 6277)
Managerial Communication applies to all levels and types of managers or supervisors who are
responsible for effectively managing personal,interpersonal, and organizational operations. The
course shall provide inputs to the participants for developing knowledge of various concepts
related to communication and their managerial application and an opportunity to learn skills and
strategies necessary for successful and effective business communication.
