The cowpat exits the cow and begins rotting away as soil microbes and bacteria feed on it and break down its proteins. Fungi that live on the cowpat further break it down through digestive enzymes. Insects and bugs also eat the cowpat as it releases nitrates into the soil during the rotting process.
