Sakhawat Hossain
• Royeka Sakhawat Hossain (1880 - 1932 ) was born into a rich
family which owned many lands.
• She knew how to read and speak Urdu, But she was stopped
from learning Bangla and English.
• In older days, English was seen a language that would expose
girls to new ideas, which people thought were not correct for
girls, Therefore, it was mostly boys were thought English.
• Royeka managed to learn both Bangla and English with the
support of her elder brother and her elder sister.
• She went on to become a writer. She wrote an amazing story
titled as Sultana’s Dream in 1905 to practise her English skills
when she was only 25 years old.

Real Life
• Royeka Sakhawat Hossain was dreaming of women flying
cars and planes even before girls were allowed to go to
school.
• This was the reason that education and learning had
changed Royeka’s Life.
• She did not stop at getting education just only for herself.
Her education gave her the power not only to dream and
write.
• She helped other girls go to school and fulfil their own
dreams.
• In 1910, She started a school for girls in Kolkata, Sakhawat
Memorial School, And till the Present, The school is still
functioning.
