UCC Cricket club had a very good start to the year of 2014 which was winning the Irish Indoor
Intervarsities,howeverone of the biggestchallengeswastobe able to maintainthisgoodform.Now
that the UCC Cricket Club was up and running, largely due to the works of the Captain Mohammed
Ali,we neededtoaccomplishbiggerandbetterthings.Oursightswere onwinningthe Irish Outdoor
Intervarsitiesandagainunderthe brilliantleadershipof MohammedAli we were able to do that and
win the tournament in Dublin in June 2014, making up for the heartbreak of the previous year.
Winningthistournamentjustshowedhow farwe progressedandhow the efforts and dedication of
the captain to UCC Cricket Club rubbed off on the rest of the squad. The tough part about the
captain’s job is not just leading the team but also the fact that he has to organise transport and
hotelsforwhereverwe playandmake sure thatthe rest of squadis satisfiedandIthink he does this
fantasticallywell.Furthermore, Mohammed Ali got us back into league cricket, something that did
not happenforthe lastfewyears,withUCC playingalmosteveryweekduringthe summerof 2014 in
the Munster Cricket League Division 2. The recent success of the club meant that we were able to
investin trainingnetsandMohammed’sjob didn’t just end there, as he had to first assemble them
and thenorganise trainingforthe players,whichagainhe didwithouthesitation.In addition, due to
the confidence of the team,UCCgot to the final of the IndoorIntervarsitiesof 2015 and eventhough
Mohammed Ali was not able to play in it because of his college workload, he made the trip all the
wayto Belfastforthe final just to cheer on the team. This to me really shows the sign of a top class
leaderandI can’t thinkof anyone else inteam, includingmyself,whowouldhave done the same. So
overall the lasttwoyearshave beenphenomenal and a real success story for UCC cricket club, and I

2. have to say thishas largelybeendown to our captain and his idea of putting the needs of the team
before his own.
