COURSE STYLE & OBJECTIVES:
The 3-day course objective is to provide the attendee
with a thorough understanding of the lasers and optics
and their use for welding and other applications.
Questions such as; what is the difference between disc
and fibre lasers, what is the best approach for my laser
welding application - should I consider conduction,
hybrid or pulsed welding, why is fibre optics so
important and what diameter is optimum, what are
the benefits/limitations of the laser approach for my
joining problem and what are the latest developments
in laser processing will be answered.
There will be 2 days of class room lectures and another
half day visit to the laser laboratory at Cranfield
University. The content of the course gives background
information, practical aspects of laser welding and
video demonstrations. The content of the course is
informative but intuitive and easy to comprehend.
It is optimised to provide the attendee with a
complete guide to laser welding with all the necessary
information on laser types, optics, laser safety, laser
material interaction, practical aspects of laser and
hybrid laser welding, as well as properties of laser welds
and control of defects and process monitoring. The
lab visit at Welding Engineering and Laser Processing
Centre at Cranfield University is a great opportunity
to see demonstrations of different laser processes as
well as other advanced welding facility and additive
manufacturing.
The course is suitable for engineers and managers
using or considering use of laser welding to improve
joining quality or solve joining issues.
ABOUT YOUR
PROMINENT TRAINER:
Dr. Wojciech Suder
Research Fellow in Laser Welding
Welding Engineering and Laser Processing
Centre, Cranfield University
United Kingdom
Dr. Wojciech Suder is a research fellow in the Welding Engineering and
Laser Processing Centre at Cranfield University. His area of expertise is
in laser and hybrid laser welding for various applications from micro-
joining to thick section welding. He holds a PhD in laser welding
from Cranfield University and MSc in Materials Science from Gdansk
University of Technology. Over a couple of years he has been actively
involved in research on fundamentals of laser-material interactions
and development of laser welding for various applications. One of
the outcomes of the work was development of a simple algorithm for
improvement of transferability of laser processes between different
lasers. He works actively towards promoting more robust “black
art”-free laser welding by encouraging better understanding of laser
welding amongst the laser users. His work, therefore has been strongly
applied and closely collaborative with various industries. One of the
recent works is focused on application of hybrid laser welding to
off-shore pipelines. Wojciech Suder understands laser welding from
practical as well as fundamental aspects.
