Historically, the royalties split was justified by record labels taking on the labour of
manufacturing and distributing physical records, and paying for studio sessions and musicians.
With the advent of streaming, the label’s role has diminished, says songwriter and Ivors
Academy chair Crispin Hunt. “Record labels are still taking a manufacturing and distributing
cut when all they’re doing is a marketing job.”

DSPの収益分配方式問題
DSPの
収益分配方式は適切か?
Spotify, Apple Music and most other major platforms use a so-called pro rata system of royalty
distribution. In this model, all the money collected from subscribers or ads for a given month
goes into a single pot, which is then divided by the total number of streams. If, say, Drake had
5 percent of all streams that month, he (and the companies that handle his music) get 5
percent of the pot — meaning that, effectively, he gets 5 percent of each user’s money, even
those who have never listened to his music.
This system, critics say, favors artists with mass appeal. Features like playlisting (where songs
are selected for curated lists with sometimes gigantic followings) and algorithmic
recommendations, they say, also contribute to a network effect in which popularity leads to
more popularity, putting niche genres at a disadvantage and extending the gulf between
music’s haves and have-nots.

you don’t even know what the size is — there’s this black box that sits between artists or rightsholders and fans and you have no idea what the
calculus is that’s going on behind the scenes that determines why you’re getting paid like 10 bucks or whatever for 100,000 streams…It’s technically
possible to give artists these freedoms and powers, so why don’t they? Why don’t those things exist?

So you could pay a recurring monthly subscription specifically to an artist and be able to get exclusive content from that artist. The thinking here is
that folks could use some of their core catalogue or tentpole pieces that everyone knows and loves as marketing to bring people into this funnel to
up-sell them into these more premium types of content and experiences, where folks typically have a higher propensity to pay or they’re willing to
pay a more meaningful amount.

―ON THE SUBJECT OF FAN CLUB-STYLE OFFERINGS WITHIN AUDIUS — HOW DOES THAT DIFFER TO WHAT PLATFORMS LIKE PATREON AND

It differs by marrying the streaming user experience with a fan club offering. There’s a lot more data available to the artists in terms of who they
should be targeting and offers around that.…Patreon has become this great place for artists to build up a super fanbase, if you will, but without
native streaming features and a broader funnel that you can source fans from.

Connecting artists directly with fans as royalty owners creates a deeper connection with aligned incentives, providing numerous advantages for
everyone involved and flipping the legacy music business model upside down. Artists can simultaneously empower their fanbase while funding their
careers. At the same time, fans get access to opportunities that traditionally have only been available to major labels, hedge funds and
highly-connected individuals.

Soundの事例
We launched with a simple hypothesis: that there is an unmet demand for listeners to support the artists they love. Our initial drops have
demonstrated that our vision is possible: all seven drops sold out in under one minute. This is early validation of one of our foundational beliefs:
digital ownership, via NFTs, allows artists to make a living off their music with 100 true fans, not millions of listeners.
Sound generated 21 million streams’ worth of revenue for seven independent artists, in under seven minutes. The economic model for streaming isn’t
just broken, it is failing to unlock the full value of music and facilitate listeners’ desire to directly support artists and discover music as a
community. Artists and their communities should determine the value of music, not platforms and labels.
