2. ABOUT OUTCOMES…
• Outcomes are a consequence or visible result.
• Outcomes research is the studies about effects of care and treatments on
individuals and populations as.
• Outcomes can be classified by who is to be measured: individuals, groups or
organizations, care related, patient related, or performance related. As well as
classified by time: short term, intermediate, and long term.
• Outcome based measurements are a means used to establish evidence based
practice and to evaluate the care delivered
(Brown & Schmidt, 2015)
3. WHY WE NEED OUTCOMES RESEARCH…
• We currently are in an era of value based care and a lot of the health care spending
in the United States is for service with unclear clinical effectiveness.
• Value based care is to get better results, improve patient health in a quicker more
efficient manner.
• Currently healthcare services are being reimbursed based on their patient outcomes.
• It literally pays to have good patient outcomes.
4. AGENCY FOR HEALTHCARE
RESEARCH AND QUALITY (AHRQ)
• AHRQ is the lead Federal agency charged with improving the safety and quality of
America's health care system.
• AHRQ mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality,
more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the
evidence is understood and used.
• AHRQ newest research priorities are:
• Reducing antibiotic overuse and eliminating health care-associated infections.
• Improving care for people with multiple chronic conditions.
• Incorporating the latest research findings into electronic health records to facilitate clinical
decision making.
• Discovering how to better provide opioid addiction treatment services in rural communities.
(AHRQ, 2018)
5. PATIENT CENTERED OUTCOMES
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (PCORI)
• The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is a nonprofit
organization authorized by Congress to fund comparative clinical effectiveness
research, or CER
• PCORI supports patient-centered outcomes research
• PCORI research priorities are:
• Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
• Improving Healthcare Systems
• Addressing Disparities
• Communication and Dissemination Research
• Accelerating Patient-Centered Outcomes Research and Methodological
Research
(PCORI, 2018)
6. THE POSITIVES OF OUTCOMES RESEARCH
I believe the positives of outcomes research is the ability to create a place of
data that can be shared with patients, caregivers and healthcare institutions to
make better, informed decisions about their healthcare. Outcomes research
helps to creates evidence based practices as well as teaching how to
incorporate them into practice. I especially like the aspect of the PCORI and
the topics about patient centered outcomes. They are researching a lot of
topics that will hopefully improve clinical patient outcomes.
7. THE WASTEFUL SIDE OF OUTCOMES RESEARCH
Any research that is done in good intentions to improve patient outcomes and is
meaningful is not really considered wasteful in my opinion. I was thinking about this
after reviewing the two websites that were a part of this assignment and I thought
there are some similarities and some differences between them. What if they
collaborated on some of their research and shared their outcomes with each other
and other like minded outcomes research agencies. If anything is wasteful I think it
would be that these agencies don’t collaborate more so there is no wasteful research
overlap or gaps.
