BLURRING EDGES
We blur hard edges that segregated and
stopped views. Blurring inside vs out-
side, landscape vs building, and blur-
ring edges between people and program.
The train and the park are both collective
elements on the site that bring people
together. The question we asked about our
site: How can we design a space that does
not create a barrier between the train and
the park, but instead blurs the edges and
creates a space that connects people to
the train, to the park, and to each other?
MIRELLE ALENA
BELOW PLATFORM | Parking extends below the plat-
form and ground, and school sports, performances,
and practices take place here, where daylight should
not enter. Between the platforms is public space.
WHERE THE PATH IS JUST AS FUN AS THE DESTINATION.
+DESIGN OBJECTIVES
+FIELD OF POINTS
Creates conditions of
edges, paths, intimacy, and
division without the need
of solid masses and walls.
+CONTINUITY OF PLANES
Continuity of planes diss-
ovles the distinction
between separate levels,
which allows spaces to
become more invivting.
+SHIFTING MASSES
Shifting masses breaks the
edges of the building and
introduces opportunities
for community space and
greater connection to
+CONNECTING SIDES
Acknowledge rail and park.
Do not create barriers.
Visual connection to train,
physical connection to
park.
+MAINTAINING AXIS
+PATH OVER STREET +ACCESS POINTS +MIXING OF PROGRAM +SOLAR CONDITIONS
Strategic massing and
orientation to allow for
all spaces on site to have
access to sunlight.
+Connection to outdoors
No obstruction of existing
axis through the site.
Maintain this path and
create public space along
path.
Move people over the street
and elevate to protect
people from the street.
Connect people to and from
the key access points.
Create paths that allow for
easy movement.
Find opportunities to
connect and mix programs to
allow for greater diversi-
ty.
Allow people inside to feel
a connection to the exteri-
or, and people outside to
connect to the interior.
NODES OF ACTIVITY
We placed programs according to nodes
of activity and circulation. The high-
est levels of activity occur at the
corners of the site due to the prox-
imity to the metro path. Programs were
located according to levels of priva-
cy and intimacy. For example, hous-
ing demands for higher levels of pri-
vacy while an office should be located
close to the nodes of activity. Green
space was also located in accordance to
the nodes of the site. The location
of the program and form of the mass.
PLATFORM PROMENADE
We created a promenade at street lev-
el and pushed program below to act as
a plinth to this platform. Greenspace
occurs at the center to allow for the
connection of the rail to the park. We
used a form that efficiently directs a
person’s path along the platform. We
pulled forms apart to break down the
scale at the platform and to break sym-
metry and allow for better control and
connection between programs. Promenades
exist within the buildings as long wind-
ing programs connect over the road.
SYSTEM OF DESIGN
Each building is separated into 2 parts
that peel up and wrap around one another,
to break up the mass and to allow for
better lighting strategies and provide
more green space for residents, workers,
students, and pedestrians. Cantilevers
indicate entrance to a new space. Scale
along promenade is maintained with the
carving and peeling. Facade system cre-
ates both unity and variety in the form.
Green spaces are created by the wrapping
of forms and gives residents and schools
private spaces away from promenade.
