This document provides an overview of a Mining Matters Teachers Workshop that will take place on April 27, 2015 at Dynamic Earth in Sudbury, Ontario. The workshop will include activities that teach teachers about the relationship between minerals, rocks, and everyday products; the types of mines in Ontario and their importance to the province's economy; and a design challenge activity where teachers learn to classify and identify rocks. Teachers will have the opportunity to examine rock and mineral samples using testing equipment and match the samples to specific minerals and products.

Intrusive

SEDIMENTARY
Clastic
• made up of pieces (clasts)
of pre-existing

• formed by chemical

Biological
• may from accumulated
carbon-rich plant material
or from deposits of animal
shells
METAMORPHIC
Foliated
•forms when pressure
squeezes the fat or elongate
minerals within a rock so
they become aligned
• develop platy sheet -like
structure
Non-foliated
•no matter how much
pressure is applied, grains
will not align
• contact metamorphism,
magma intrudes into pre-
existing rock; baked by heat
