This document summarizes and analyzes several materials promoting gender equality:
1) A UN poster featuring a woman from a religion with gender stigma, using dark tones and a search bar over her mouth to represent how women have been silenced.
2) A colorful Global Fund for Women poster depicting determined women of different races with empowering imagery like a raised fist.
3) The Global Fund for Women website promoting gender equality through inspirational colors, imagery and wording.
4) The United Nations social media account for gender equality, which uses bright colors and facts to raise awareness and empower followers to join the cause.
2. UN Women Poster
Here is a poster created by the United Nations to help tackle
gender equality and all inequality related to women. There is
various strings of posters similar to this one. This particular one
features a women who is part of a religion and country where there
is a stigma against women being as good as men. Overall the poster
has a sinister, dark tone because is tackling quite a dark issue. The
women has an emotionless appearance because the poster isn’t
designed to express happiness or sadness in particular. This could
represent how empty these women will feel. The Google search bar
across the mouth implies that women have been/are silenced by
these stereotypes and ideals. Within the box we see “Women need
to be” and then below are the search results. The search results
consist of negative, controlling ideals which exist in many countries
still today. Below this Google search box is a sentence which reads
“Women need to be seen as equal”. The text is white, to stand out,
and is a simple, clear font so the message is conveyed.
The purpose of the poster is to raise awareness of the issues
discussed here and to promote the cause to others through the use
of emotive and offensive imagery and quotes.
3. Global Fund for Women Poster
This poster is part of the Global Fund for women campaign.
As you can see, it is very bright and colourful poster which I
feel allows the campaign to stand out against other
campaigns. The bright colours are quite motivational and
contrast well with the people in the poster. Imagery used in
the poster is powerful and inspirational. The women third in
is shown with her fist in the air which is a powerful and
motivational stance. The women look serious, like they are
determined to get this sorted. The imagery is illustrated and
is somewhat abstract, which I think works well with the
colour scheme. They’re of different races which is important
for a campaign about equality. The hashtag in the centre is
in a bold and loud font which helps ‘shout’ out the message.
Having this hashtag will also allow people to easily find the
movement and join in on social media. In the top left there
is the organisation’s logo which will help people relate the
movement to a findable website.
The purpose is to raise awareness of gender equality and
their organisation.
4. Global Fund for Women Website
This is the website for the organisation Global Fund
for Women, as you can see it is a organisation for
global equality. There is the logo for the campaign in
the top left corner. This allows people to link the
campaign to their other work and possibly
merchandise. The first thing that your eyes go to is
“Uprising: moment for change.”. The up arrow implies
that the campaign is working towards moving
forwards or up. The word change implies that things
will be changing for the better, therefore inspiring
people. The colours green and purple are used
throughout the website. These two colours contrast
well with the white background and are quite
motivational colours. There is a “What we do” section
which is clear to see and allows people to find out more
about the organisation. People can also find out the
latest information about what the organisation have
been doing. Overall the website promotes a positive
message and uses inspirational imagery, colours and
wording.
This website is designed to give information and raise
awareness about their campaign.
5. United Nations Social Media Account
This is the social media account for the United Nations
Global Goals campaign, who run the Gender Equality
global goal. As you can see the profile picture is the logo
for the global goals campaign. This allows people to
find the profile easily and link the campaign to logo.
The font is bold and large which allows it to stand out
and be easily read. It’s almost as if the text is shouting
at you. For the banner at the top there are images of
smiling children which connotes positive imagery. The
colours used are bright and powerful, therefore again
bringing a positive and empowering tone. There are
facts used throughout this social media account. As you
can see the pinned tweet is a fact about women's
equality. This raises awareness of many issues and
allows people to easily follow along with updates and to
get facts – hopefully empowering them to join the
cause.
The purpose of this social media account is to raise
awareness and to promote the campaign.
