12,000 Impoverished Children Set to Attend
FORT WORTH - Back to School Roundup will be hosting an event at Will Rogers
Memorial Center to provide school supplies, haircuts and immunizations to 12,000
underprivileged youth from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. on Aug. 18.
The event is available for Pre-K to 12th-grade students who live in Tarrant County
and are enrolled in public school. The student must also qualify for Free and
Reduced Lunch Programs. Pre-K through 5th-grade students will also receive free
backpacks. Members of each family will be able to receive health screenings and
visual screenings at no charge.
“This event really is a game changer for thousands of Tarrant County families,” said
Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley.
The family-friendly event requires a pre-registration that includes proof of
residency, proof of income and a picture ID. Once pre-registration is approved, the
student will receive a voucher for all of the services the event offers.
The volunteer-driven, nonprofit event will include a Vendor Expo where
participants receive information from businesses and social service organizations.
The exhibitors will cover a variety of topics including literacy, parenting and
finances. There will also be family-friendly events such as games, live entertainment
and booths.

Parking at the event will cost $5 per vehicle. The T will provide free round-trip
transportation on the day of the event. There will also be will be free parking with a
complimentary shuttle service from Farrington Field.
The organization supplied 10,000 students with back to school essentials in 2015.
The increase in participants could be explained by the rising cost of school supplies.
Parents expected to spend an average of $100 per child preparing for the 2015-
2016 school year, according to a survey conducted by Capital One in 2015. This
number does not include electronic devices, such as graphing calculators.
ABOUT BACK TO SCHOOL ROUNDUP
Back to School Roundup is a nonprofit that was founded in 2005. Its mission is to
provide low-income children in Tarrant County with school supplies and essential
services that contribute to their accomplishments. It has served about 100,000
students to date. It is an association of 20 different partner entities who collaborate
to provide free supplies to disadvantaged students. Examples of the partner entities
that are involved include local school districts, government agencies and faith-based
organizations. The organization does not receive any government funding; it is
privately funded through donations, sponsorships and grants.
