Chess as a game has ancient roots, and the credit
for its invention has been claimed by several
countries. The generally accepted origin of chess is
in India, where it was known as Chaturanga as
early as the 6th century AD. Despite its long
history, competitive chess is comparatively recent,
only coming into being in 1834.
3. At the outset, modern competitive chess presented
problems. In the 1851 London chess tournament,
the main issue raised was the time taken by the
players to think about their moves. It took as long
as two hours just for some players just to
contemplate a single move. This led to the
development of several variants of chess that allow
for quicker playing times: speed chess, five-minute
chess, and a version which allows a time bank for a
certain number of moves. The last variant has
proven to be the most popular among competitors
in today’s hurried world.
