3. Definition
Berardo, K. (2005) described the intercultural
competence as “the capacity of behaving
effectively and accordingly by using the
intercultural sources.”
4. Definition from a language teaching and
learning view
Intercultural competence is the ability to behave
effectively across cultures, to think and act
accurately and to communicate and work with
people from different cultural background – in our
country or abroad.
5. Main Goal
To develop the appropriate competences on
language learners which allows them to behave
effectively across cultures, to think and act
accurately and to communicate and work with
people from different cultural background – in their
country or abroad.
6. Importance
• It allows people to develop intercultural-
communicative competences to understand and
respect others who are culturally different.
• It allows people to respond appropriately,
effectively and respectfully when interacting and
communicating with others whose culture is
different.
7. Dimensions
According to Fantini, A. (2007). Intercultural
competence can be divided into four dimensions:
•Intercultural knowledge
•Intercultural attitude
•Intercultural skills
•Intercultural awareness
8. Teacher’s role
They will then act as mediators between cultures
and should be able to wake up the students’
motivation and curiosity towards different
realities. Hernandez,Y. (2019).
9. Learner’s role
Learners should be familiarized with
intercultural contexts that show different sides or
perspectives of a same reality, being critical not
only towards their own culture but also towards
the culture of others. Hernandez,Y. (2019).
10. Class activity: Intercultural Communication
Objective: To exchange customs and cultural facts about their own culture with their classmates.
Duration: 15 minutes - Student’s level: B1 - Environment and context: Classroom /Virtual Classroom. EFL Learners with
different culture.
