OpenStack is a community. It takes a community to develop such a massive ecosystem, but the sheer size of it also presents a barrier. This session will present two aspects of OpenStack Contributions. From a Developer's perspective you will learn how to make your first OpenStack contribution, from your creating your account to identifying low hanging fruits, or even trying to push a new project to the ecosystem. From the Operator's perspective, we have not yet reached the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Operators are still not yet accepted as equal members of the OpenStack community. We will go over some of the history, current issues, what is considered a contribution to OpenStack, and how this should, and can change.

The presentation introduces a number of these pilot projects, where we have developed design tools comprising of Sirius based graphic editors and Domain Specifics Languages (DSLs). These tools allow formal specification of requirements, automatic analysis of system performance, and code generation. The models are designed using Sirius and are persisted textually using Xtext. We have found that the use of graphical editors in these projects greatly helped communicating designs between stakeholders and also leveraged the general acceptance of the MDE approach. In our case, Sirius models can become quite big and require a proper layout. We used Eclipse Layout Kernel (ELK) for automatic layout which turned to be essential for efficiency. The presentation concludes with future directions towards utilizing Sirius in fulfilling new requirements from stakeholders, e.g., generating documentation from models.

Automatic suggestion functionality on most websites are simply standard Solr fuzzy wildcard queries on a concatenated index. For the Dutch public transportation website 9292.nl we created a more contextual autocompletion function, that uses the different address fields of the source database to its advantage, which allows it to better understand what address a user means in this highly ambiguous data environment. Porównywanie modeli, wersjonowanie kodu oraz monitorowanie procesu trenowania modeli mocno spowalniały prace. Dodatkowo podczas rozmów z zespołami z innych firm okazało się, że im także brakuje narzędzia, które usprawniałoby ich codzienną pracę. Te zdarzenia zaowocowały napisaniem Neptune.

R is a hugely popular platform for Data Scientists to create analytic models in many different domains. It is simple and ubiquitous. And a large number of readily available packages make it very powerful for statistical computing. But when these applications should move from the science lab to the production environment of large enterprises a new set of challenges arises. Independently of R, Spark has been very successful as a powerful general-purpose computing platform that leverages clusters of computers and is able to process data at a scale that has not been feasible before. With the introduction of SparkR an exciting new option to productionize Data Science applications has been made available. This talk will give insight into two real-life projects at major enterprises where Data Science applications in R have been migrated to SparkR. Suggested Topics: • Dealing with platform challenges: R was not installed on the cluster. We show how to execute SparkR on a Yarn cluster with a dynamic deployment of R. • Integrating Data Engineering and Data Science: we highlight the technical and cultural challenges that arise from closely integrating these two different areas. • Separation of concerns: we describe how to disentangle ETL and data preparation from analytic computing and statistical methods. • Scaling R with SparkR: we present what options SparkR offers to scale R applications and how we applied them to different areas such as time series forecasting and web analytics. • Performance Improvements: we will show benchmarks for an R applications that took over 20 hours on a single server/single-threaded setup. With moderate effort we have been able to reduce that number to 15 minutes with SparkR. And we will show how we plan to further reduces this to less than a minute in the future. • Mixing SparkR, SparkSQL and MLlib: we show how we combined the three different libraries to maximize efficiency. Summary and Outlook: we describe what we have learnt so far, what the biggest gaps currently are and what challenges we expect to solve in the short- to mid-term.

The landscape of security threats an enterprise faces is vast. It is imperative for an organization to know when one of the machines within the network has been compromised. One layer of detection can take advantage of the DNS requests made by machines within the network. A request to a Command & Control (CNC) domain can act as an indication of compromise. It is thus advisable to find these domains before they come into play. The team at Akamai aims to do just that. In this session, Aminov will share Akamai’s experience in porting their PoC detection algorithms, written in Python, to a reliable production-level implementation using Scala and Apache Spark. He will specifically cover their experience regarding an algorithm they developed to detect botnet domains based on passive DNS data. The session will also include some useful insights Akamai has learned while handing out solutions from research to development, including the transition from small-scale to large-scale data consumption, model export/import using PMML and sampling techniques. This information is valuable for researchers and developers alike.

In a project of the complexity of the SKA, it is very important to be very observant of the different requirements for the SKA telescopes, and how they are implemented by the different sub-systems. And because the design of the SKA is evolving, the need to assess the impact of design changes, and potential trade-offs, is more relevant than ever. In this talk I will present how the SKA Organisation is leading the Systems Engineering work of the different consortia, and how we are using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to integrate the design inputs from the sub-systems, and be able to keep a Systems view that ensures that the element designs are sound, and really comply with the stringent requirements posed by the SKA.
