5. Dear il coco verde:
I have created some possible design schemes for your company and its branding image, which we will
explore in this portfolio. There are a few factors that have affected some of my design choices for your
unique brand, which I will detail below.
As you know, with the all-natural, coconut oil based beauty products that you sell, you will be competing
against companies that fit various segment(s) of your target market. These companies include: all-natu-
ral neighborhood vendors, large name brands like the Honest Company, and companies like Bath and
Body Works and Sephora—which contain natural elements in some of their product line. Another thing
to keep in mind, your small strip mall location in Poway, California differentiates you from the compe-
tition and will affect your method of advertising. Since you are a start-up company, preparing for future
business, it is important that your initial advertising approach is strong, such that it resonates with your
potential customer base and encourages them to give you a shot. I have made sure to emphasize that your
products are all-natural and use a coconut base, two recent health trends that your products incorporate.
With this in mind, the tagline I suggest—and have implemented in the logo—is as follows: all-natural,
coconut based products. Your phone number and address have been incorporated throughout the portfo-
lio, as it is crucial knowledge for the customer in all aspects of advertising.
Your demographic, mothers between the ages of 30 and 50, looking for a health conscious alternative to
health and beauty products filed with chemicals, is imperative to your marketing strategy. These women,
middle and upper middle class, value the benefits of coconut oil for themselves and their families, which
has affected my approach to your unique brand. It is important to note that you should target those in
this demographic that are members of the Starbucks rewards program, in your store, as a Starbucks is
right across the street, which should attract business for the company. My suggestion would be to work
out some joint advertising with that location, after you have established your individual brand. Because
this target audience needs an all-natural line of health and beauty products for their families, your com-
pany will focus on satisfying the need for a home-made line of health and beauty products in the Poway
are, which is reflected in this portfolio. You are a local company which will get to know your customers
on a personal basis, a trust factor that will help you gain additional sales in Poway, which I have kept in
mind. Your unique combination of a health and beauty line that is both all-natural and coconut oil based
is another competitive advantage you have, which I have pushed in this campaign. The ultimate goal of
the design schemes in this portfolio is to portray il coco verde as a family-friendly and personable com-
pany.
Best,
Michaela Spartz

12. Growing organic vegetables is labor
intensive, says Craig Cogger. Cogger is
a researcher for the Department of Crop
and Soil Sciences at Washington State
University.
“Weed management, amend-
ment choice, and cover crop
management are particularly
challenging when growing
vegetables in an organic sys-
tem,” Cogger says.
Farmers have been using a mix-and-
match approach to practices for growing
their organic veggies. Which
combination of practices was best,
however, was uncertain.
Cogger and colleagues studied twelve
different combinations of practices
over the course of ten years to see what
worked best. Their study included three
types of cropping systems. One system
planted a fall cover crop, another used a
relay-planted cover crop, and the third
system was a short-term grazed pasture.
Cogger and his team grew broccoli, let-
tuce, winter squash, spinach, snap bean,
and winter wheat.
After studying the samples and analyzing
the data, Cogger and his team found that,
overall, the changes in the soil were
short-term. “The overall results may not
be too different
from a shorter
experiment, but
the longer-term
study helps our
understanding
of the evolution
of organic
systems,”
Cogger
explains.
Cuckoo for Coconutsby and for health-conscious mothers
Coconut oil prices have soared nearly
20% in a month, largely because of the
growing popularity of specialty products
such as coconut water.
Such trendy products come from young
green coconuts, fresh coconut and the
trees’ flowers. That leaves less dried
coconut—copra—to be made into the
conventional oil that is used in every-
thing from dish detergent to medicine.
The result has been a jump in
prices to an average in March
of $1,448 a metric ton, accord-
ing to World Bank data.
Global consumption of coconut water
jumped 13% from 2014 to 2015,
following a 24% increase the previous
year, according to data from beverage
research firm Canadean.
The trend toward specialty products
is being felt throughout the coconut
industry, so prices aren’t likely to drop.

Organic Valley-
Milk Traced From
Table to FarmFounded by seven dairy farmers in 1988 in La Farge, Wis.
(population: about 750), Organic Valley now counts as members
more than 1,800 farmers, mainly in the United States. Of those,
1,456 are dairy farmers, 342 raise beef cattle and 174 grow
produce. The members’ total sales for 2015 reached $1.04
billion. About 40 percent of the dairy produced by the
cooperative is sold as bulk milk and other ingredients to
manufacturers like Stonyfield, while dairy products made by
Organic Valley and carrying its brand are sold by retailers
including Whole Foods Market, Costco, Walmart and Target,
as well as by conventional grocery, convenience and specialty
food stores.
The cooperative, which for many years invited retailers and
others in the food industry to visit its members’ farms, began
offering free “farm discovery tours” to the public in 2014. This
year it is offering four: in Kutztown, Pa., and Kewaskum, Wis.,
in June; in Enumclaw, Wash., in August; and in Petaluma, Calif.,
in October. The June tours catered to visitors from New York,
Philadelphia and Milwaukee, and the later tours are aimed at
visitors from Seattle and San Francisco.
Regina Beidler, who runs an Organic Valley dairy farm with her
husband in Randolph Center, Vt., advises the cooperative on its
marketing efforts in the eastern United States.
Farm visits also are central to Organic Valley’s new social me-
dia efforts. The cooperative invited so-called social influencers
like Eva Amurri Martino of Happily Eva After, Naomi and Josh
Davis of Love Taza, and Naomi Robinson of Bakers Royale to
participate in the Kutztown farm tour last month, and it plans
to work with others in the future. The hope, according to Karen
Zuckerman, chief creative officer of the agency HZDG, which
worked with Organic Valley on its marketing strategy, is that
the influencers will share their experiences on the farm with
their many followers on social media, who will then investigate
organic farming for themselves.
“Our hope is by building the movement, our business will grow
with it,” said Lewis Goldstein, vice president for brand
marketing at Organic Valley, which is spending $500,000 to $1
million on the new website, and social media initiatives.”

Did you know? Lavender, an essential oil, is one of the most
well-studied essential oils in terms of its relaxing effects. One study found that
lavender oil aromatherapy calmed the nervous system — lowering blood
pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature as well as changing brain waves to a
more relaxed state.
Lavender can also help with mild insomnia and provide better quality of sleep.
Lavender aromatherapy has also been found to help reduce anxiety and
depression in women with postpartum depression. Lavender has also been found
to help reduce anxiety in many medical settings, such as dental offices, the
intensive care unit, and during preparations before surgery.
The scent of lavender stimulates brain pathways, including our limbic system,
which is connected to our emotional response and memories. Studies using
electroencephalography (EEG), which measures brain waves, and brain imaging
using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) show significant changes
during lavender aromatherapy consistent with its relaxing effects.

Stuffy Nose?
Try Essential Steam
You will need...
~5-10 drops of eucalyptus, tea tree oil, or a combination
~1 heatproof bowl
~Boiling water
~A towel
Directions:
Put the essential oils in the bottom of the bowl
and then pour in several cups of boiling water.
Start by putting your face over the bowl at a
comfortable distance - steam can do some
damage if you aren’t careful.
Eventually have your face directly above the
bowl as close as comfortably possible. Drape
the towel over your head to trap all that healing
steam, and take deep breaths. Resurface as
needed if you become too warm. Have some
tissues handy to blow your nose after!
Repeat 2-3 times daily, adjusting the amount of
essential oil to your preferences. Some people find that too much will make their eyes water, so start with less.2

Letters to the Editor
Hi Michaela!
My name is Andrea McAllister, mother of three in San Diego,
California. I have been reading your magazine for a few months now,
and I appreciate all of the helpful tips! I was hoping you could
recommend an Essential Oil for headaches, my younger son complains
about them constantly. Thank you so much!
Hi Andrea! So glad you have been enjoying the magazine! About the head-
aches, one of the most popular essential oils for headaches would be pepper-
mint. If you place a few drops on your son’s hands, have him rub them to-
gether, then smell the aroma, his headache should begin to subside. ~Michaela
Hello Michaela,
My name is Kathryn Anderson, I have two under
the age of five. I am on a limited budget, and
wanted to know if you knew of a cheap, all-natural hair mask
for my hair. It has been looking really dry lately. Thank you!
Hi Kathryn! I’ve got just the product for you! If you have any coconut oil ly-
ing around the house, take one cup and massage it into your scalp. Leave it for
30 minutes to 1 hour, then condition thoroughly, and your hair should begin
to restore its natural shine! ~Michaela
