2. History
Formally known as poona, it was a popular sport in
India and then it become popular in England where it
got its current name Badminton, Named after a house
in England. In 1934 the International Badminton
Federation was created.
7. Basic Terminology
Ace – a point gained by the server immediately after his/her
serve.
Doubles – a match composed of 2 players on each opposing side.
Deuce – when the score is tied at 20 all, and player/pair has to
lead by two points to win the set.
Fault – an infraction of the rules.
Let – to stop the rally due to some outside interference.
8. Basic Terminology
Love – the term used to indicate the score zero.
Point – a score gained by any of the players.
Rally – the exchange of shots after the serve has
been delivered.
Singles – a match where there is one player on each
opposing side.
11. Basic Strokes
Forehand – dominant side of the body.
Backhand – non-dominant side of the body.
Underhand – played near the net.
Overhand – played near the long service lines/back court
Sidearm – played near the sides of the net.
12. Basic Shots
Clear – hitting the shuttlecock
high from the backcourt, high into
the opponent’s backcourt.
