Distributed
actors
collaborating
in
research,
experimentation
and
innovation:
Collaboratories
and
Living
Labs.
Abstract
Two
prominent
approaches
involving
groups
of
distributed
actors
collaborating
on
research,
experimentation
and
innovation
are
collaboratories
and
living
labs.
This
dissertation
finds
that
these
two
methods
of
working
can
be
collapsed
into
a
single
category.
The
single
category
containing
collaboratories
and
living
labs
can
be
visualised
on
a
two
dimensional
coordinate
system
created
for
this
dissertation
called
the
Innovation
Orientation
and
Geographical
Distribution
Plane
(IO&GD
Plane).
This
dissertation
contains
primary
research
in
the
form
of
case
studies
of
seven
different
organisations
(three
collaboratories
and
four
living
labs).
The
hybrid
categorisation
arose
from
the
recognition
of
relationships
and
commonalities
between
collaboratories
and
living
labs,
based
on
information
from
case
studies.
The
dissertation
concludes
in
a
discussion
of
like
characteristics
amongst
the
organisations
in
the
hybrid
category,
and
potential
for
shared
theoretical
and
practical
outcomes,
which
may
arise
from
situating
the
organisations
in
a
single
grouping.
