Atkins Pre Maintenance Phase

Afterexperiencingthe InductionandOWLphasesof the Atkinsdiet,yournextstepistoenterthe pre -
maintenance phase.Thisphase will setyouupfora lifetimeof healthyand balancedeatingandliving.
You shouldbeginthisphase asyoucome within5 to 10 poundsof your targetweightgoal.Yourweight
losswill be sloweddownevenfurtherbutitisfor a purpose.Youwant to learnthe practicesandhabits
that will determine yourlong-termsuccess.
In the OWL phase,youwill be addingcarbohydrate gramstoyour dailycountinthe incrementof 5
grams perweek.Duringpre-maintenance youwillincrease thatto10 gramsper week.Aslongasyou
are continuingtoshedweight(no matterhow slowlyitiscomingoff) youwillcontinuetoaddgrams.
Ideally,towardthe endof the pre-maintenancephase youwill be losinglessthanone poundperweek.
Accordingto the Atkinsbook,youshouldcontinue thisphase until yougettoyourgoal weightandcan
maintainitfora month.Thisprocessmaytake anywhere from1to 3 months.Your goal is toreach a
state called“carbohydrate equilibrium.”Thisisyourideal carbohydrate intake anditwill cause youto
maintainyourweightperfectly.
Duringpre-maintenance you’ll gettotrya widervarietyof foods.Make sure tointroduce new foods
slowlyandincrease yourcarbohydrate intake atameasuredpace.Don’tadd 20 or 30 carb grams a
week.Measuringoutthe increasesinincrementsof 10 will give youabetterideaof yourpersonal
carbohydrate count.Knowingthisnumberwillhelpsetyouupforlongtermweightmanagement.
