Africanstudents. Studentsare mentoredbygroupsof interdisciplinaryresearchersandcommunity

Developedthe virtual urban ecologyclassroom –anadvancedurban ecologyclasstaughtbyMelissa
McHale at NCSU and Lucy Hutrya at BostonUniversity. Utilizingnew technology,webconferencing
software,andwikis,studentsinteractedwitheachotheracrosscampusesandhadvirtual presentations
and discussionsessionswithleadersin the fieldacrossthe US.
Developedandwrote aproposal to SouthAfricanNational Lotteries(10millionRand) insupportof a
long-termcommunityrunnon-ProfitcalledTshuluTrust.Tshuluhassuccessfullyimplementedahome-
stay programfor universitystudentsthatbringssignificantfundstostrugglingfamiliesinthe region.Our
proposal,if funded,will expandthisgroup’scapacitytoruna successful researchandeducationbased
tourismfacilityin rural SouthAfrica.
Establishedthe Environmental Monitorprogramwiththe TshuluTrust,SouthAfrica – Workingwiththe
Krugerto CanyonsBiosphere Reserve,2environmental monitors (anemploymentcreationproject
fundedbythe SA government) are workingforthe TshuluTrustwithcapacitydevelopment,training,
researchsupportprovidedbyMcHale and the IMAGINE team. The effortshere are diverse and
extensive. Forexample,McHale etal.provide reportsandfeedback tothe Trustand the local Tribal
Authorityonwaterqualityandavailabilityinthe area. Thisinformationisused tofacilitatediscussions
withthe local and national governmentsonsolutionstotheirwater-relatedissues.
OrganizedaninterdisciplinaryworkshopJanuary2014 called,“Ourresilientfuture:Bringingtogether
diverse perspectivesforachievingsocial andecological healthandwell-beingalongthe borderof Kruger
National Park”. In collaborationwiththe KnowledgeHubforRural Development(WitsU),the Krugerto
CanyonsBiosphere Reserve,andthe Urban SustainabilityResearchCoordinationNetwork,we facilitated
a seriesof roundtable discussionsamongadiverse groupof stakeholdersmeanttoinformthe processof
creatinga researchnetworkandguide the developmentof importantsocio-ecological research
questionsinthe region.
