Bi-weekly garbage collection to begin next year
T
he Region of Waterloo will
spend almost $130 million
on waste collection during
the next seven years, after approv-
ing a switch to bi-weekly garbage
gathering beginning in 2017.
Regional council approved two
collection contracts last Wednes-
day (Jan. 20) – one for the three
cities for about $14.4 million per
year and one for the townships for
almost $4.2 million.
Those contracts are for a period
of seven years, with the option of
two one-year extensions. Garbage
collection contracts are typically
seven years because it aligns with
the lifespan of the trucks and other
vehicles required for service.
The companies, Miller Waste
Systems and Halton Recycling
Ltd., will provide standardized
every-other-week garbage pickup
with weekly collection of organics
and recyclables. They will also pro-
vide collection of bulky items, yard
waste and Christmas trees.
The new contract is expected to
save about $21 million throughout
the duration of the agreement –
about $3 million per year.
But some of those savings will
be put toward educating residents
on the change in curbside collec-
tion.
A staff report indicated an
implementation and education
plan, as well as additional staff to
deal with any issues, could cost as
much as $800,000.
“I can say that I was pleasantly
surprised to see the amount of sav-
ings that we realized,” said Coun.
Sean Strickland during a regional
committee meeting earlier this
month.

ENJOYING OLD MAN WINTER
FISH FINDERS: Now that cold temperatures have arrived, ice fishing season has officially begun. Here, Stephanie Ford,
of Kitchener, waits patiently for a bite at Shade’s Mill Conservation Area on Sunday (Jan. 24), while Dan Connell, also of
Kitchener, gets his line ready.
I
nformation technology experts
withWaterloo Region District
School Board have beefed
up boardwide Internet filtering
systems, but caution that adding
filtering equipment at each school
may be a costly – and unnecessary
– endeavour.
A report presented toWater-
loo Region District School Board
trustees last night (Jan. 25), details
upgrades made during the last half
of 2015 to reduce chances students
might view inappropriate content
via school-providedWi-Fi.
Trustees requested an updated
overview of board Internet safety
protocols following concerns raised
by parents, including a Cambridge
pastor and father, who complained
students at his kids’ former school
were able to access violent sexual
images and video when logging
ontoWi-Fi.
