The unification of Italy was a process of creating a single Italian state during the 19th century. Italy remained divided even after 1848. The movement for Italian unification lasted from 1815 to 1870. The movement had two periods - the first from 1815 to 1849 when civic revolutionaries and patriots tried to liberate and unite Italy through uprisings and revolutions. The second period from 1850 to 1870 saw the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont) diplomatically and militarily, with the help of the national liberation movement, achieve the unification of Italy.
