How can we continue our success
and move our country forward!
Introductions
Let’s introduce ourselves and get to know each other
What are some of our key accomplishments and disappointments
2020 Recap
Top Issues to
discuss
• Did the Democratic Party
succeed in 2020? Why yes or
no?
• Are you happy with the
Democratic Party?
• What are some ways to
improve the Democratic
Party?
• How can we all work together
to win future elections?
Activism Strategy
What are some ways we can organize communities better?
We elected Joe Biden
We defeated
Donald Trump
making it only
the fourth time
an incumbent
has lost in a
century.
VP Kamala
Kamala Harris, the daughter of an
Indian mother and a Jamaican
father — both immigrants —
became the nation’s first female
vice president, as well as the first
Black American and first person of
South Asian descent.
Raphael Warnock
• Rev. Raphael Warnock made
history when he become
Georgia’s first Black senator
and the first Black Democrat to
represent a southern state in
the Senate. Warnock will be the
11th African American to serve
in the US Senate.
Georgia and
Arizona go BLUE
• Georgia flipped blue in
presidential race for the first
time since 1992
• Arizona flipped Democrat for the
first time in 24 years.
Record number
of votes
• President Biden won about
81.2 million votes, the most
votes a candidate has won in
US history.
• He beat Trump by nearly 7
million votes.
• 137 million votes in 2016 and
158 million in 2020, a modern
record of 66.7 percent of the
eligible population
Swing Voters
• Twice as many GOP defections
from Trump (8 percent) to
Biden. Trump was able to pull
away from Biden among
Democrats (4 percent).
Women voters
• Women outvoted men by 4
percent. Biden carried women
by 55-44, while Trump carried
men by 52-46.
Voter Shift
• The 19% of 2020 voters who did not vote in 2016
or 2018 split roughly evenly between the two
candidates (49% Biden vs. 47% Trump).
• Among those under age 30 who voted in 2020 but
not in either of the two previous elections, Biden
led 59% to 33%
• Trump won among new or irregular voters ages 30
and older by 55% to 42%.
• Younger voters also made up an outsize share of
these voters: Biden received 85% of the vote who
picked independent or third party in 2016.
Biden made gains with
suburban voters.
In 2020, Biden improved upon Clinton’s
vote share with suburban voters: 45%
supported Clinton in 2016 vs. 54% for
Biden in 2020.
Biden
maintained
solid support
among
African
Americans.
The number of new Black voters was key to
Biden’s win in several swing states.
Biden won nearly 200,000 more Black votes in
Georgia than did former Democratic
presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016,
far more than his 11,779-vote margin of victory
in the state.
Biden scored 28,000 more Black votes in
Arizona.
Black voters increased by 14% from 2016 to
2020. Biden and Hillary got about the same
percentage of black voters.
Joe Biden
appealed to
the center
of the
electorate
across party
lines.
• He did 10 points better than Hillary
Clinton among Independents, and he
doubled her showing among moderate
and liberal Republicans.
Young Voters
Millennial and Generation Z
voters made up nearly a third of
the electorate (31%) in 2020
The number was 14% in 2008,
17% in 2012, 23% in 2016 and
31% in 2020.
Biden won 61% of voters 30 and
Under.
Diverse
Coalition
• Biden attracted a
much more racially
diverse group of
voters, with 39% of his
support coming from
nonwhite voters and
61% coming from
white voters. By
comparison, 85% of
Trump’s voters were
white and 15% were
nonwhite.
First Time Voters
• Many younger voters cast a
ballot for the first time or voted
in their first presidential
election — especially in swing
states. More than a third of
voters in Nevada, Arizona and
Texas and nearly a third of
voters in Georgia voted for
president for the first time.
Biden won 56 percent of new
voters and 62 percent of new
voters under 30 years old.
Not a
Landslide
Biden won the electoral
college by 44,000 votes in
Wisconsin, Georgia and
Arizona.
Trump made gains
among Hispanic voters.
Trump made gains among this group overall.
His share of the Hispanic vote jumped by 10
points, from 28 to 38%.
Sitting Out
• Despite the record turnout, millions of
Americans who are eligible to cast
ballots remained on the sidelines. More
than 70 million people who were eligible
to vote opted not to in 2020, including
about a quarter of whites, more than a
third of Black residents and half of
Latinos.
