The document provides information on creating an inclusive basketball program. It discusses:
1) Planning is key and involves determining the target group, engagement strategies, and whether the program will be integrated or segregated. Tools like a RAT and partnerships can support planning.
2) Engaging stakeholders like the board, community members, and advocacy groups is essential. Barriers to inclusion need to be identified and addressed.
3) A public statement from leadership demonstrates commitment and markets the inclusive efforts. Identifying key drivers who champion inclusion is also important.
4) Ongoing review using feedback and a RAT ensures barriers are addressed and the program is sustainable. Bringing all the pieces together—planning, partnerships

9. Planning
§ Planning is the key to all projects and programs
ü Planning assists Sustainability
§ The majority of all barriers can be solved during
the early stages of Planning
KEY ELEMENTS OF PLANNING:
Who are you going to target?
Priority Population (Key Target Group)
Adults or Children
Day, Afternoon or Evening Program
9
Planning
10. Planning (Continued)
How are you going to engage your Target Group?
Communication:
Ø Paper (Flyers, Newspapers)
Ø Digital (Email, Internet, Radio & TV)
Steering Group
Ø Representatives of your club/association
Ø Members of Key Target Group organisations
Ø Representative of Local Government
Ø Local Access All Abilities (AAA) Provider

Integration vs Segregation Where will it fit ?
Integration:
Ø Participants will join a existing program / competition
Ø PWD, will participate with mainstream participants
Ø Not the ideal environment for everyone!
Segregation:
Ø A good starting point when exploring inclusion
Ø Comfortable environment for majority of PWD
Ø Programs / Competitions will operate independently to
mainstream programs offered by the club
11
12. RAT Readiness Assessment Tool
Using the RAT
§ RATs are used to review the preparation of a project
§ A simple scoring system & traffic light alert system is used
§ Each area of the project, can be broken down & evaluated
§ Areas that need attention are flagged in RED
§ RATs allow users to look at the short & long term sustainability
of a project and will provide decision makers, much needed
information to effectively plan & ensure the project remains on
track
12
14. Partnerships
§ Partnerships are a great way of utilizing external
organisations that are experts in your key Priority
Population
§ Engaging partners will make sure you don t go
through the Inclusion process alone
§ Partnerships should be reviewed regularly to ensure the
long term sustainability of projects
Look for Quality, Not Quantity
§ Without quality partnership, you maybe creating more work for
yourself!
§ Look for partners who can share ideas, resources, influence &
control
14
Partnerships
15. PAT Partnership Analysis Tool
Using the PAT
§ PATs allow clubs to monitor & evaluate, current and potential
partnerships with external organisations
§ A simple scoring system & traffic light alert system is used
§ An overall partnership health check , covering all key aspects of
a partnership are broken down & evaluated
§ Areas that need attention are flagged in RED
§ RATs allow users to look at the short & long term sustainability
of a project and will provide decision makers, much needed
information to effectively plan & ensure the project remains on
track
15
17. Engagement
§ Key element is to engage key stakeholders that work
within your Priority Population
§ Without engaging the stakeholders, the project is
doomed even before it starts!
§ Engage your Board & Senior Management Team
Engage

over them, stop them .
§ Most barriers have a path around them
18
No
Barriers
§ Attitudes alone can be a barrier
§ Clubs vs Inclusion vs Elite Priority

during the Inclusion process:
The committee has been working closely with Basketball Victoria
on inclusive practices. Our staff, board, coaches and other key
stakeholders have been involved in inclusion and adaptive coaching
workshops.
The committee, has established an Inclusive Working Group, that
will develop a model that will include all of our current members
and will serve the whole community.
In addition, the committee is looking at models that will include
greater levels of participation opportunities that will engage our
entire community.

§ Key Attributes of a Driver:
o Communication Skills = Social Personality
o Read & Reacter = Decision Maker
o Integrity = Interest of the entire project, not just their piece of

21
Key Drivers
22. Review & Inspect
§ Critical Essential to Sustainability
§ Critical Analysis isn t always bad!
§ Use the RAT for evaluation to monitor progress
§ Feedback from Stakeholders interviews, surveys
& feedback forms are great ways of collecting
information
22
Review
Gather all of your information=
1. Consult with your participants & partners
2. Identify barriers & enablers
3. What has worked ? Why ?
4. What hasn t worked ? Why ?
5. Develop an Action Plan
