Did you know that living at elevation can reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and ALL diseases? In this episode, we discuss the remarkable health benefits of living or vacationing in the mountains, high up above sea level at elevation. You'll also learn the mechanism underlying the physiological benefits from altitude on the human body and how you can use this information to improve your health today.

2. INTRODUCTION
People have made the claim that living at high altitude can bestow remarkable health benefits
including longer lifespan and reduced risk of disease compared to people living at sea level. A number
of professional athletes are alleged to train at elevation before events to enhance their athletic
performance. One olympic gold medal swimmer even sleeps in an altitude chamber to prepare for
competition.
Is there any science behind these behaviors or
are they just superstition?
3. FACT:
LIVING AT ELEVATION REDUCES YOUR RISK OF HEART
DISEASE & STROKE

consideration of climate, topography and built environment. J Epidemiol Community Health. 2016;70(8):798-806.

7. In a radio show called The Herb Doctors, Dr. Raymond Peat mentions a Russian
study in which rats were induced with cancer and put at elevation. After
spending just a short period of time at elevation, 50% of the rats healed
without any other medical interventions.
CAN ELEVATION BE MEDICINALFOR PEOPLE
WHO ALREADY HAVE CANCER?
8. Fact:
Elevation increases lifespan
187-year-old Peruvian man in 1950’s
came down from the mountains to
tour the US as an oddity. After a
couple weeks visiting, he was sent
back to Peru and died shortly
afterwards.
The long lives of the Hunza people of
northern Pakistan are credited to
their diets containing mostly nuts,
fruits and seeds and yogurt. One
lesser-known yet important factor is
that they lived at an altitude of 2500
metres.
9. HOW DOES IT WORK?
The decrease in oxygen pressure that occurs at elevation means
there is less oxygen pressure pushing carbon dioxide out of cells,
allowing the body to retain more carbon dioxide – a phenomenon
known as the Haldane effect.
Increased CO2 in the body at Elevation.
10. Without CO2 you can’t use O2; increased CO2 means greater O2 use.

11. UFC FIGHTERS TRAINAT ELEVATION – BIG BEAR,
CALIFORNIA
“It is not uncommon to be driving to work and see Sugar
Shane Mosley jogging in the snow beside the boulevard.
Boxers first started training up here full time in the late 90's,
Oscar De La Hoya in particular. At one time, Oscar, Fernando
Vargas, and Sugar Shane all owned homes in Big Bear Lake.
Oscar recently sold his estate to former Light Heavyweight
Champion Of The World Tito Ortiz.
Even more than the boxers, MMA fighters have been
training here in droves. In the past year alone, I have seen
or met Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Tito Ortiz, Joe "Daddy"
Stevenson, Cub Swanson, Michael Bisping, Matt Hammil,
Cheick Kongo, Justin Levens, Tyson Griffin, Gray Maynard,
and Josh Burkman. Joe Stevenson, Cub Swanson, and Justin
Levens have even been gracious enough to do free seminars
at the Karate school I attend.”

12. OLYMPIC SWIMMER MICHAEL PHELPS’ ALTITUDE
CHAMBER
American gold medal olympic swimmer Michael
Phelps has been known for sleeping in his
‘elevation tent’ which surrounds his bed.
This creates the same atmospheric conditions as
being at altitude.
13. MOUNTAIN SICKNESS?
ACETAZOLAMIDE
Acetazolamide works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anyhdrase, which
prevents the breakdown of carbon dioxide, thus helping the body retain CO2.
A commonly prescribed drug treatment for mountain sickness is called
acetazolamide, which works well although most doctors don’t understand why.
14. Another way to treat elevation sickness is to breathe in a bag, which helps
your body retain more carbon dioxide by rebreathing your exhaled CO2.
15. NEGATIVE FEATURES OF ALTITUDE
Cosmic Radiation is more intense at high
altitudes, but due to a concept called linear
energy transfer, the rays end up going right
through you without causing much damage.
16. HOW HIGH?
In 2009, a Swiss study involving 1.64 million people found
that the benefits of altitude begin at an elevation of about
900m and that for every 1000m increase in elevation,
mortality from heart disease decreases by 22% and
mortality from stroke decreases by 12%.
Study: Faeh D, Gutzwiller F, Bopp M. Lower mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke
at higher altitudes in Switzerland. Circulation. 2009;120(6):495-501.
San Francisco and Philadelphia researchers reported a
12.7% drop in the incidence of lung cancer for every
1000m increase in elevation.
Study: Simeonov KP, Himmelstein DS. Lung cancer incidence decreases with elevation:
evidence for oxygen as an inhaled carcinogen. PeerJ. 2015;3:e705.
How high must one go to gain the benefits of altitude?
17. VACATION AT ELEVATION?
2 months at higher altitude made rats have double the mitochondria for
the remainder of their lives at lower altitude.
When asked how long the benefits of a one month vacation at high
altitude would last, Peat replied “about a year and a half.”
Would there be any health benefits to vacationing at higher altitude?
1 Month Vacation at Altitude= 1.5 Years of Benefit
