STORY
Balfour Beatty
Construction (BBC)
“AutoDeploy’s software is like a
person who is the very best at
understanding how the change
management process in JD
Edwards EnterpriseOne affects
every touch point in the business.
IT, our cloud provider, our business
users, and our management team.
The software takes every best
practice and embeds those best
practices, and expertise, into code.
The affect of implementing the
AutoDeploy suite has been a real
win for Balfour Beatty.

Challenge
In an effort to lower costs and simplify the daily management of JD
Edwards EnterpriseOne, Balfour Beatty Construction (BBC) engaged a
managed services provider (MSP) for CNC expertise and applications
support. With an MSP, BBC hoped to implement a consistent,
standardized approach to their change management lifecycle.
By outsourcing the more challenging aspects of EnterpriseOne - package
management, complex development - BBC expected to reduce cost
pressures associated with EnterpriseOne change management.
BBC’s user community is composed of a significant number of employees
and contractors. Software changes to JD Edwards introduced the
opportunity to impact the day-to-day operations for over 1000 users.
From managing the volume and rate of business requests to managing the
pace and complexity of the changes required, the MSP was unable to
meet the expected level of service required by BBC. As BBC encountered
disjointed communication between groups, delayed deliverables and
inconsistencies in the overall project and development lifecycle, they
quickly realized they no longer had total visibility into the change
management process and were no longer able to impact the throughput
of their own requests.
Solution
BBC implemented AutoDeploy’s full suite of application release
automation software technologies: Envoy, Execution Assurance, and
Change Console for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.
What is application release automation? At its core application release
automation is the consistent, repeatable, and auditable process of
packaging and deploying software updates, changes, and enhancements
from development, across various environments including production.
BBC’s IT department was able to rapidly integrate AutoDeploy’s software
into their native change management process and were able to see
returns by addressing the growing complexity, distributed nature, and
specialized requirements of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne software.

“AutoDeploy has helped our
organization align our business
users and IT in ways that I never
could have imagined.
Organizationally we have been
forced to be more rigorous in
understanding and managing a
process. And that is something that
most prospective customers might
not see, because I didn’t see it till
we bought the AutoDeploy suite.

Results
BBC realized that by using a manual process, they would be unable to
keep up with the velocity of their business. With their current
development model spearheaded by an MSP, BBC had little impact to
accelerate or optimize the development lifecycle. By utilizing the
AutoDeploy suite of products, BBC was able to displace their MSP with
their own staff.
Eliminating an external group streamlined communication. But the
biggest gains came from closing gaps in disjointed coordination and
simplifying the hand-offs between internal groups. With AutoDeploy’s
suite providing automated notifications of real-time status of all current
changes, BBC now had total visibility across environments, further
promoting meaningful and efficient collaboration.
Increased visibility and internal control over the change management
process set the stage for BBC’s shift to automated package
management. Automation empowered the IT and the business to align
objectives and rewire the development process to effectively deliver
change in an accurate, and agile methodology. With standardized,
consistent processes in place, BBC was able to increase output with
their current staff, normalizing the cost, and reduce cycle times.
As BBC implemented standardized processes within development, they
were able to free up time and resource capacity to analyze how to
proactively improve both the software and related processes. BBC’s
business users were no longer waiting for changes to hit production but
were already mapping out and prioritizing the next set of requirements.
Further analysis of ad hoc requests provided BBC with insight to shift
more changes into the standardized development lifecycle. BBC is now
in a position to use IT as a competitive advantage to rapidly push out the
next update.
