Cary’s Seeing Red; Dedicating Its Newest Fire Station
Fire Station 2 houses both engine and rescue companies
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary is set to dedicate its newest engine house December 18 at 11:30 a.m. New Fire Station 2, 601 East Chatham St., is
a 13,395 square foot, two-story building that will house both an engine company and a rescue company. The new station replaces an outdated,
40-year-old facility that was in disrepair and only designed to accommodate one fire truck and four firefighters - the new station boasts two trucks and 27
firefighters.
“We’re excited to see the project come full circle,” said Fire Chief Allan Cain. “The new station helps us reach our goal of providing effective citizen service
as well as meet our response-time goals for both fire and rescue operations. We want the Cary community to know its fire department stands ready for
emergencies.” The public is invited to the event. Limited parking is available in the parking lot at the back of the station on Reedy Creek Road and along
Reedy Creek Road at Chatham Street.
Station 2 has additional space available to store reserve apparatus (engine or truck), and two fire poles that allow easy access to the apparatus floor from
the second floor and aid quick turnout times for the firefighters. This is only the Town’s second station with two fire poles. Bi-parting doors on the pull-
through bays open quicker than traditional overhead doors allowing a faster response and reducing the likelihood of damage to the trucks. The drive-
through apparatus bays also eliminate the need to back the trucks into the station. A rear stairwell offers built-in training features for limited on-site fire and
rescue training for the station’s personnel. The project’s sustainable features include solar assist hot water heating, energy-efficient site lighting and
energy-efficient HVAC.
Site acquisition, design and construction of the fire station are part of the project’s estimated completion cost of $5.5 million. Cary voters approved $6.45
million in funding for the project in the 2012 Community Investment Bond referendum.
The Town of Cary Fire Department is internationally accredited and recently improved its ISO rating from a Class 3 to a Class 1 rating with the most recent
evaluation effective on July 1, 2015. The Town of Cary’s fire, police and parks, recreation and cultural resources departments are all nationally accredited.
