This document provides instructions for building a simple solar oven out of a pizza box that can be used to preheat or cook food using only sunlight. It is a sustainable alternative to traditional cooking that avoids costs and pollution from fuel. The solar oven is constructed by cutting a square flap in one side of the pizza box, covering it with aluminum foil, and adding plastic and black paper inside to absorb heat from the sun's rays. Food is then placed inside and the oven is left in direct sunlight to preheat or slowly cook the food without using any fuel.

EXPLANATION
Solar oven is a device which uses the PIZZA BOX
energy of sunlight to heat food or drink to
cook it or sterilize it. High-tech versions, ALUMINUM FOIL
for example electric ovens powered by
solar cells, are possible, and have some PLASTIC WRAP
advantages such as being able to work
in diffuse light. However at present they
are very unusual because they are
BLACK PAPER
expensive. The vast majority of the solar
cookers presently in use are relatively GLUE
cheap, low-tech devices. Because they
use no fuel and cost nothing to operate, SISSORS
many nonprofit organizations are
promoting their use worldwide to help
reduce fuel costs for low-income people,
reduce air pollution and slow
deforestation and desertification,
caused by use of firewood for cooking.
Solar cooking is a form of outdoor
cooking and is often used in situations
where minimal fuel consumption is
important, or the danger of accidental
fires is high.
