THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES/CABINET OFFICE: From November 2007
Head of Standards (£59,258 per annum)
Key Responsibilities
• Setting and implementing policy for the re-use of government information;
• Leading the statutory disputes resolution policy and practices, including acting as
Chair in formal mediations between public and private sector;
• Transposing and implementing the European Directive on the Re-Use of Public
Sector Information;
• Senior advocate for The National Archives, influencing, negotiating and liaising with
diverse stakeholders, including Ministers, to shape policy and establish and promote
best practice;
• Regulator of the government trading funds;
• Setting and assessing standards for knowledge and information management across
central government through the Information Management Assessment programme;
• Member of the senior management team with a pivotal role in decision and policy
making and;
• Management responsibility for seven staff and a budget of £353,000.
Key Achievements
• Built a dynamic team that continues to excel;
• Developed close links with co-regulators, including Information Commissioner and
Competition and Markets Authority, leading to new MOUs;

• Introduced independent exemptions panel to consider applications to use Ordnance
Survey derived data;
• Established Licensing Forum for government practitioners to disseminate policy

• Delivered key presentations to a wide range of stakeholders, receiving positive
feedback;
• Led three workstreams to implement the amending EC Directive on the Re-Use of
Public Sector Information;
• Led the successful investigation of a number of high profile complaints, effecting

• Launched a mediation service to resolve commercial disputes between public and

Delivered management information solutions to senior managers and Ministers. This
included building a central team of 28 from scratch to deliver first class results; acting as
senior responsible officer for IT projects; setting clear, achievable measures for anti-
smuggling activity and monitoring/reporting against these.

Developed a strategy to facilitate information exchange with other government departments.
Representational and executive roles for the Department and project manager for pilot
exchanges.
