Purchasing Power Europe 2016 on the rise
Purchasing power is on the rise in central and eastern European
countries. Europeans have around 0.3 percent more nominal purchasing
power per person in 2016 compared to last year. The available net
income of the population varies substantially among the 42 countries.
The highest average purchasing power can be found in Liechtenstein,
Switzerland and Luxembourg, while the lowest is in Belarus, Moldova
and the Ukraine. Ukrainians have only one eightieth the average
purchasing power of Liechtenstein inhabitants. A total of approximately
€9.18 trillion is available to European consumers in 2016 for spending
and saving. This corresponds to an average per-capita purchasing power
of €13,672 for the 42 countries evaluated in the study, which is a nominal
increase of approximately 0.3 percent. The low growth in Europe's
average per-capita purchasing power is due to exchange rate effects
and stagnating growth rates in some of the larger countries, among
other factors. Nonetheless, many countries have growth rates above
5 percent, including Iceland, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, the Czech
Republic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Malta, Slovakia, Luxembourg
and Latvia.
Key economic issues that influence retailers in Europe
The European economy has recovered from the doldrums of 2012-2014,
largely due to the aggressive monetary policy of the European Central Bank
(ECB), which involves massive purchases of government bonds, combined
with the positive effect of low oil prices. The ECB policy has suppressed
the value of the euro, thereby boosting export competitiveness; created
inflation when there otherwise would have been deflation, thereby lowering
real borrowing costs; boosted asset prices, thereby increasing wealth and
stimulating consumer spending; and improved credit market conditions,
thereby enabling small and medium-sized companies to regain access to
capital. The result has been modest yet somewhatdisappointing growth.
Inflation remains extremely low, leading to increasing expectations that the

ECB will boost the size of its asset purchasing program. This would have
the effect of further lowering the value of the euro.The ECB policy, combined
with the low price of oil, has led to a revival in the growth of consumer
spending, an improvement in credit market conditions, and renewed growth
of employment as well as a decline in unemployment. It has also had a
positive impact on export growth. Yet it has failed to significantly increase
businessinvestment. Within Europe, some countries are performing better
than others.The star performers are Spain and Ireland, while Italy has begun
to show signs of revival. German domestic demand has been steady, but
export growth has been stymied by troubles in emerging markets. Outside
of the Eurozone, the British economy has been growing at an admirable
pace, with a strong labor market helping to fuel steady growth of retail
spending.Despite Europe’s evident revival, risks remain. With ruinously high
unemploymentinmanycountries,Europehasseentheriseofmanyanti-euro
and anti-EU parties, of both the left and right.As this process unfolds, it could
create greater difficulties for Europe’s governments when they attempt to
resolve imbalances and crises, and if they choose to attempt greater fiscal
and financial integration. Indeed, the latter are probably necessary in order
to create an architecture that would make the euro more sustainable.Another
risk concerns demographics.The population of Europe is aging and, in many
countries, the working age population is in decline. This threatens growth
and also makes it more difficult to provide adequate services to the elderly
population. One solution is to allow more immigration. Yet this is fraught
with political controversy and threatens social tension, as evidenced by the
recent debate about welcoming Syrian refugees.
Europeans are becoming richer and richer
During the past few years, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Iceland,
the Baltic States, and Kosovo have been among the countries which
have managed to boost their populations‘ purchasing power (in Euro) by
the widest margin in percentage terms. In contrast, the largest nominal
€ losses between 2010 and 2015 have been registered in Greece and
Cyprus (debt crisis), Ukraine and Russia (military conflict), as well as
Belarus. However, even countries with nominal increases of up to 10%,
such as Italy, Spain, or Hungary, still had to contend with economic
difficulties. In real terms, i.e. with inflation taken into account, purchasing
power decreased or stagnated in these countries. Two special cases
are also among the countries with nominal increases of between 10%
and 25%: in both Turkey and Serbia, high rates of inflation ate up
these gains and have resulted in decreased purchasing power in real
terms. Kosovo has experienced high relative growth rates, such that
purchasing power has since caught up to that of Albania. However, since
the country’s purchasing power was low to begin with, the gains have
been similarly small in absolute terms. Highly positive development has
been observed also in the Baltic States as well as Iceland. Although the
United Kingdom and Switzerland have registered purchasing power
increases in their national currencies, the high rates of growth in Euro
are mostly an effect of exchange rate levels. These levels are likely to
remain relatively stable for the Swiss franc, but following the Brexit vote,
absolute purchasing power in Euro in the United Kingdom is expected
to be much lower for 2016.
European consumer confidence rising quickly
The current edition of the RegioData Shopping Climate Index (SCI)*
points to a very pleasing development of the shopping climate in many
Western and Central European countries. However, the situation does
look quite different in the CEE region. With the exception of a select few
noticeable improvements, the consumer climate in the region as a whole
has developed rather negatively. This is particularly noticeable in the drop
of the CEE region’s average SCI index, at a time when the total European
average has actually risen. In particular, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece,
and Belarus are among the countries whose SCI’s have been very low for
many years now. But the shopping climate has been worsening – quickly
– also in Ukraine and in Russia over a longer period of time. Significant

improvements are also not likely in most of the other Eastern European
countries. However, Serbia and the Czech Republic are among the few
CEE countries with positive shopping climate development as of the latest
edition of the index. In contrast, consumer confidence has been thoroughly
positive in Western and Central Europe, compared to previous periods.
Particularly noteworthy developments have been registered in the former
“crisis states” Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. The shopping climate in these
three countries has improved dramatically in recent times. In the current
edition of the index, Ireland has even recorded the highest SCI increase
among all examined countries. The shopping climate is also positive in
Germany. In fact, Switzerland and Germany’s SCI indices are both above
100, followed closely by Austria with a value just below 100. Consumer
confidence is positive also in France, Iceland, and the Scandinavian
countries. The situation is not expected to change significantly in the
near future.
Purchasing power in Europe: The Swiss at the summit
Absolute purchasing power is truly booming in Switzerland. Thanks to
the exchange rate, the absolute purchasing power of the Swiss is nearly
40,000 Euros per capita per year, yielding first place in Europe. Due to
comparatively worse growth, Luxemburg has had to give up its traditional
role as frontrunner. Strikingly positive purchasing power development is
being observed in Iceland. In 2013, the country was not even among theTop
10, but now Iceland is in fifth place. The skilful politics and policy for dealing
with the financial crisis are clearly showing their effects with particularly
good purchasing power development. In the Scandinavian countries, the
economic situation is relatively stable, but exchange rates may obscure the
calculations – the current decreases are thus entirely a result of exchange
rate fluctuations. The two problem children, not only in terms of purchasing
power, are unsurprisingly Russia and Ukraine. Both countries have been
fighting uphill battles the past few years. Absolute purchasing power in
Ukraine is currently around 1,190 Euros per capita per year, one of the
lowest in the ranking. The difficult situation in Greece is also no secret.
Absolute purchasing power in Greece had already plummeted below
10,000 in 2014 and continues to decline. In contrast, Cyprus appears to
have gotten back on track after its own financial troubles – the situation is
stabilizing and Cyprus is currently the most prosperous southern European
country. RegioData has often shown that there is considerable inequality
not only between countries, but also in the development within individual
countries. Nonetheless, the trend is moving toward a narrowing of the gap
between rich and poor. For example in Italy, the well-known North-South
gap has been closing slowly but steadily over several years now. Whereas
in 2012 the difference in purchasing power between the wealthiest and
poorest municipalities was still nearly 17,000 Euros, by 2014 this difference
had decreased to around 15,500 Euros.
Weekday expands in Europe
Weekday opened nine stores in Europe during 2016. The fashion chain
has opened in new markets, such as Sweden, Belgium andAustria. Back
in April, the first branch was opened in Vienna, at the same time, another
store was opened in Sweden. There were three more store openings in
Norway, joining four existing stores in the country.
Dunkin' Donuts has big plans to expand in Europe
America may run on Dunkin’, but the retail chain is not stopping there.
Dunkin’ Donuts opened 55 stores across Europe in 2015, boosting its
continental footprint to more than 220 locations. The store openings are
part of expansion plan in Europe that began at the end of 2014. The 2015
store openings brought the American coffee-and-doughnut chain to four
European countries—Denmark, Georgia, Iceland and Poland—for the first
time. When Dunkin’launched the expansion, it planned to open more than
1,000 stores across the continent that catered to local tastes.

Despite the steady decline, the Swiss watch market foresees
potential growth
The Swiss watch market was on steroids, driven by the gifting policy in
China at the time. The industry, which accounts for a 10th of Switzerland’s
exports, has also been hurt by the surging Swiss franc, which forced
many brands to cut prices in export markets to stay competitive.
The emergence of smartwatches from Apple Inc. started to weigh on
demand for lower-end timepieces. In response, Omega put two James
Bond-theme lines on sale, aiming to attract younger clientele. Further
clouding the outlook, the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris threaten to
keep tourists away from Europe.Still, there is long-term growth potential

in China and the United States as consumers become wealthier.
Analysts predict one percent sales growth for Movado Group Inc. in
2016. That compares with five percent for Swatch. For Richemont’s
coming fiscal year, which starts in April 2016, analysts forecast sales
increasing 10 percent.
Switzerland GDP increased
Switzerland's economy grew by 0.6 percent in the June quarter of 2016,
as compared to an upwardly revised 0.3 percent expansion reported
in the previous three months and beating market consensus of a 0.4
percent growth. It was the strongest growth since the fourth quarter
2014. Year-on-year, the economy expanded 2.0 percent, accelerating
from an upwardly revised 1.1 percent growth in the March quarter
while market estimated a 0.9 percent growth. GDP Growth Rate in
Switzerland averaged 0.43 percent from 1980 until 2016, reaching an
all time high of 2.10 percent in the fourth quarter of 1999 and a record
low of -1.90 percent in the second quarter of 1982.
The cost of living in Switzerland is among the highest in
the world
The cost of living in Switzerland is among the highest in the world, with
the cities of Zurich and Geneva recently named the most expensive
worldwide.The Swiss National Bank’s decision on January 15, 2015
to scrap an exchange rate ceiling with the euro made the Swiss franc
gain in value and Swiss goods and services even more expensive
compared with eurozone countries.A study by UBS bank published in
September 2015 found that Zurich and Geneva top the list of the world’s
most costly cities, ahead of New York. On average, total household
expenditure in Switzerland is around 50% higher than the European
Union average, according to 2014 Eurostat figures. The Economist uses
a “gratifyingly simple” way of calculating purchasing-power parity by
using the price of a Big Mac. According to the January 2016 Big Mac
Index, the Swiss must pay $6.44 for the same burger that would cost
$4.93 in the United States.

Swiss watch industry after sales fell more than 10 percent in 2016 and
net profit almost halved. The company, whose brands include Omega
and Blancpain as well as mass market Swatch products, said that the
final two months of 2016 and the start of 2017 had seen very good
growth in watches and jewellery revenues, especially in mainland China.
Swatch expected “healthy growth” in sales in local currencies in 2017.
Swatch reported net profit had fallen 47 percent to CHF 593 million
in 2016, while sales dropped 11 per cent to CHF 7.55 billion. In 2016,
Swiss watchmakers had their worst year since the global financial crisis,
with exports falling 10 percent, largely as a result of weakness in Hong
Kong and the US, the industry’s two biggest markets. Sales to Chinese
buyers have been hit in recent years by a corruption clampdown in the
country, while consumer spending on luxury goods in Europe has been
damped by terrorist attacks. But Nick Hayek, Swatch chief executive,
has argued the downturn does not represent a crisis for the industry and
is largely the result of globetrotting consumers increasingly choosing
to buy where prices are cheapest. “The environment is improving but
it is still going to be a choppy year,” said Mr Cox. “If you look at some
of the company’s past outlook statements, its comments for ‘healthy
local currency growth’ look actually quite cautious.” In early European
trading, Swatch’s shares were down 3 per cent at CHF 339.9, reflecting
how its 2016 results fell short of analysts’ expectations. Swatch reported
“double-digit” sales in local currency in the UK, after June’s referendum
vote to leave the EU sent the pound sharply lower — as well as the cost
of luxury watches to overseas buyers in London boutiques. Swatch’s
optimistic outlook has meant it has held back from dramatic steps to
cut production. Swatch said sales in Hong Kong had normalised in
recent months, while demand in mainland China had picked up. Other
Asian markets had also recovered, while the Middle East had recorded
“double-digit growth”. Swatch’s expectation of “healthy growth” in local
currencies in 2017 applied to the US and Europe.
Switzerland is key piece in the puzzle for Jigsaw expansion
Jigsaw is eyeing Switzerland as the launch pad for a European expansion
to sidestep fears over Brexit. The fashion retailer has defied the gloom
felt by some of its high street rivals following a collections revamp under
the leadership of Peter Ruis. The Chief Executive, who has an ambition
to grow Jigsaw’s revenues from 100 million to 500 million Pounds, said:
“Switzerland has a good economy and no matter what’s happening in
Europe they will manage it.” Jigsaw’s planned European expansion
would largely focus on department store concessions, which are lower
risk than store leases. The retailer has 77 shops in the UK, four in the
US, five in Australia, two in South Africa and three in the Middle East.
Aldi plans 120 new stores in Switzerland
Aldi Switzerland has big expansion plans. The discounter aims to develop
an additional network for 120 stores, therefore increasing the total
branches to 300 throughout the country. Aldi will also invest 70 million
Swiss Francs in the modernisation of the existing store network. All
locations are to receive a new store design, the convenience sector and
the presentation of fresh fruit and vegetables are also to be enhanced.
KFC plans market entry in Switzerland
The US fast food chain KFC reportedly plans in the next two years to
enter the market in Switzerland. Currently KFC should be looking for
locations and franchise partners such as in Zurich, Basel, Geneva,
Lausanne, Bern, Lucerne and Winterthur. The company reveals nothing
about its expansion plans, so it is not yet known how many KFC outlets
will be opened in Switzerland. The company had already tried in 2004
to enter Switzerland by itself, but the stores closed.
Bata closes its 29 Swiss stores
The 29 Swiss stores of specialist footwear retailer Bata will close down.
The group made the announcement on 18th April 2016, justifying the
measure with competition from online sales and the Swiss franc's
strength, which encourages local consumers to buy in neighbouring
countries. As a result, the group explained that it will proceed to close
down its 29 Swiss stores.

Rituals opened in the heart of Zurich
The cosmetics brand Rituals inaugurated up a new store in the centre of
Zurich on 27th May 2016. The brand has taken over former Yves Rocher
store, which closed its doors at Bahnhofstrasse 100 and will then move
to the opposite side of the street. Rituals is among the upcoming retailers
moving to the prestigious street in 2016.
Salt launched flagship store in Zurich
Salt’s 86th store has opened in the heart of Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse at
number 94 on 28th February 2017. Salt is the first telecommunications
business that opens a 130-square-metre retail store at the most frequented
part of Bahnhofstrasse which is starting from the train station.They took over
the former L’Occitane store and reached an excellent sales performance
from day one.
Beldona to change address on Bahnhofstrasse
Beldona will move to the new location after a long time situated at
Bahnhofstrasse 71. The new address is at number 87, at the former
Goldhaus store, where the upcoming neighbour will be Yves Rocher.
The store holds 146 square metres of retail space.
Yves Rocher moved its house
After a long time situated at Bahnhofstrasse 100, Yves Rocher changed
its address to former Läckerli Huus store at number 87, just opposite
the old store. The store will neighbour Beldona, Fielmann and H&M.

The Spanish textile giant group Inditex has leased the
current Swiss bookseller Orell Füssli’s retail space for its
new Zara Home store. Orell Füssli closed its branch at
Bahnhofstrasse 70 as of May 2016 with the arrival of Zara
Home in mid-year. Today, the store is the most attractive
location between Hauptbahnhof and Paradeplatz, which is
the best match for a Zara Home store. Industry experts said
that Zara could have paid Key Money of 2.5 million Swiss
Francs with an estimated annual rent of two million Swiss
Francs for the 500-square-metre space.
Prada opened a new shop in Zurich
Prada officially established a presence in Zurich with a
new boutique on the legendary Bahnhofstrasse; one of the
most exclusive shopping streets in Switzerland. Prada took
over the Burger-Haus building at Bahnhofstrasse 42 and is
estimated to pay a rent of three to four million Swiss Francs
annually (the key money of 23 million Swiss Francs included).
The new space covers a total area of approximately 1,100
square metres over three floors and offers collections for
both men and women. In design, Prada sought to combine
the strength of its own heritage with a dynamic evolution of
style and technology. Borsani chairs evoke classic Italian
design while a sleek black marble façade and rhythmic
composition of windows harmonize with the architectural
elements of the existing building.

Vacheron Constantin installed a Zurich store
The Gaydoul Group announced the closure of the Fogal store and the
sale of lease at Bahnhostrasse 38, Zurich in April 2016. The brand
made room for the Swiss watch retailer Vacheron Constantin to open
its first own store in Zurich. The city’s most prestigious global brands
in the domains of fashion, watches and jewellery stand side by side
along the luxury shopping street, an ideal location for this more than
100 square-metre store.
Tiffany & Co. Zurich store reopened
On 6th October, Tiffany & Co. Zurich store at Bahnhofstrasse 14
reopened its doors after several months of reconstruction. The 187
square-metre store was completely redesigned with reset inner walls.
The remodelled store was implemented by Michelle Oka Doner and is
one of series of the brand’s existing stores worldwide to be redesigned.
New Dolce & Gabbana store opened
Italian luxury house of Dolce & Gabbana has opened a new store
in Zurich. The luxury brand inaugurated a mono-brand store at the
exclusive Bahnhofstrasse 10 in January 2016. The new store was
installed in the Haus Gryffenberg and occupies 830 square metres of
retail space on three of the seven floors. The new opening marks the
first directly operated store by the brand in Switzerland. The building
was built between 1883 and 1885 in late German Renaissance style.

Casual Luxury setting up a new Zurich store
Casual Luxury by Landolf&Huber moved its Zurich space in Jelmoli to
Rennweg 24. The shop in Jelmoli department store closed its doors on
29th October and in mid November, the new bigger and more sparkling
store opened its doors with fine jewellery and accessories. The new
store on Rennweg is located nearby jewellery stores such as Landorf,
Devon, John R. and Mephisto.

Ba&sh launched a new Zurich store
Ba&sh, the French fashion brand has opened a new store in Zurich
city centre. Located at the former Monadico store at Strehlgasse 10,
the store is surrounded by other international brands such as Wolford,
Peuterey, Furla, Patrizia Pepe and Max Mara. Ba&sh was launched
in 2003 by Barbara Boccara along with her long-time friend Sharon
Krief. They both decided to seal their friendship merging their names
to create the perfect outfits they would wear every day with a feminine,

TOOché set up Zurich store
Zurich has welcomed a new womenswear store TOOché. The store
officially opened its doors in the former Silk & Cashmere at Strehlgasse
3 in September 2016. Offering products from different luxury brands
such as Versace, Jil Sander and Christian Lacroix, the new store is
a reasonable destination for buying and renting clothing, bags, shoes

The French cosmetics brand Clarins is not only selling its luxurious cosmetic

Charles Vögele closing its flagship
Charles Vögele was about to close the 1,500-square-metre large branch
near Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich at the end of 2016.At the beginning of 2016,
Migros planned to use Charles Vögele’s location at Sihlstrasse 3 to open a
shop of SportXX from 2017. But then it came different as everybody thought
and Oviesse (OVS) made an offer to buy Charles Vögele Switzerland for
56 million Swiss francs. Overall, the Italian brand is now represented with
163 stores in Switzerland.
Claudie Pierlot announced Zurich’s new outpost
Claudie Pierlot, the SMCPgroup’s brand, has opened a new store in Zurich.
Taking over the former Onitsuka Tiger premises at Sihlstrasse 17, the new

Breitling launched its second Swiss flagship store
Breitling has opened a new store in Zurich on 1st October which is run by
ZM Zett-Meyer AG. The new store is located at Augustinergasse 48, at
the former jewellery store Berkowitsch. Covering 80 square metres over
two floors, the new premises is the second Swiss flagship store following
the first one launched in Geneva in June 2016.
Tasoni opened Zurich shop
Tasoni, Zurich’s newest fashion boutique opened doors on 10th June
2016. International designers such as J.W Anderson, Fausto Puglisi,
Loewe, Berluti and Edie Parker, just to name a few, are elegantly brought

Yves Delorme has opened a new store in Zurich. Located at the former

established in 1845. The store joins other international surrounding
neighbours such as Hermès, Anne Fontaine and Blancpain.
Santa Lucia launched a new restaurant in Zurich
The Italian gourmet restaurant Contrapunto, which is one of Bindella's
businesses, closed its location on the corner of Paradeplatz and Münsterhof.
Instead, a Santa Lucia branch, which also belongs to Bindella, opened
there from 11th September. The area around the Paradeplatz has plenty
of medium and high-priced restaurants, that is why the chain brought the
Italian specialty which is so popular with young and old to Zurich's most
expensive area.
Issey Miyake moved its Zurich store
Japanese fashion brand Issey Miyake moved its current Zurich store
located on Storchengasse 7/In Gassen to a more attractive location at
Munsterhof 12. Situated directly across the Fraumünster Church on an
intimate square, the store occupies a 230-square-metre ground floor unit
of a 13th-century building.
Tokujin Yoshioka, the Tokyo-based architect who has created interiors of
many Issey Miyake boutiques across the planet, has designed a setting
that hinges on an intricate balance between a futuristic aesthetic with
clean lines, captured by coloured aluminum panels, and the building’s
original architectural details. The relocated Issey Miyake boutique carries

Gassmann has moved its Zurich house at Poststrasse to a new location.
The new store was installed at Weinplatz 3, at the former Pastorini store

Pomellato, Jil Sander, Hotel zun Storchen, Céline, Dolce & Gabbana and
Valentino, opened its doors inAugust 2016. The new store covers on four
floors with 640 square metres of retail space.
Boréal opened a new coffee shop
Boréal coffee shop, originally from Geneva, just opened their first shop
in Zurich on 3rd October. Located in the heart of the business district at
Talacker 41, Boréal offers a laid back, cosy and open space for customers
to indulge in the aroma of freshly roasted coffee and savour a scrumptious
chocolate brownie. Apart from espresso based coffee, they also serve
matcha latte, chai latte, hot chocolate and a range of Frappé.
Galerie Gmurzynska opened an art gallery
Galerie Gmurzynska, an international art gallery with locations in Zurich, Zug
and St. Moritz, Switzerland, that specialises in modern and contemporary
art as well as Russian avant-garde, has opened its second location in
Zurich. The new gallery is located at Talstrasse 37, which used to be a
Gassmann, Weinplatz, Zurich
Rost & Gold store. The gallery was founded in 1965 in Cologne, Germany
byAntonina Gmurzynska. From the beginning, the gallery was interested

Lidl opening new location in downtown Zurich
Lidl Switzerland will open a new branch in downtown Zurich. The
discount chain supermarket has signed with Swiss Prime Site AG to
secure a location in the traditional Fraumünsterpost at Kappelergasse
1. The planned sales area of the store is expected to be around 1,000
square metres and includes the full range from the discounter. It is not
yet known when the business is open.
Blue Tomato opened its first store in Zurich
Blue Tomato have opened their first Swiss bricks and mortar premises.
The 530 square-metre space at Limmatquai 122 in Zurich opened its
doors on 27th October. On two floors, the store offers everything for
snowboarders, skaters and surfers, to trendy streetwear, shoes and
accessories. The Austrian brand currently has 28 stores in Vienna,
Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Berlin.
Soho opened its new store in Zurich
Soho, the Swiss gothic-inspired fashion and accessories label for women,
has opened a new store in downtown Zurich. The store is situated at
Limmatquai 98 which was previously home to Buffalo. The new shop
presents the trendiest and sexiest collections, including clothing, lingerie,
accessories and even swimwear.
Lucy installed a new Zurich store
On 25th February 2016, Lucy celebrated its new store opening in
Zurich. Located at Limmatquai 88, the store is an addition to bustle

Essentiel Antwerp came to Zurich
On 3rd March 2016, the Belgian brand Essential Antwerp unveiled its

Modissa space is the first and only Essentiel location in Switzerland.
The new Essentiel store in Zurich will showcase full collections of ready-

Lululemon debuted standalone store in Switzerland
The Lululemon showroom in Zurich is now closed but the Canadian
athletic apparel retailer has instead opened its official standalone store
in the country. The store is located at Marktgasse 12 in the Niederdorf
area of Zurich which was previously housed by a local store The Gallery.
In the newly-renovated historic building, the Lululemon store covers
500 square metres on two floors and side surfaces. The grand opening
took place on 22nd July 2016.
The Nail Bar opened a new store in Zurich
The Nail Bar has opened a new store in the Niederdorf area in Zurich.
The new store is located at Münstergasse 23, at the former Visconti
store and allows customers to come with or without an appointment for
treatments for hands and feet, while having a drink.The Nail Company
Sàrl was founded in 2010 by two associates Florence and Daniel

New American Vintage store in Zurich’s Niederdorf district
The famous French brand American Vintage has opened its first store
in Switzerland at a top location in Zurich’s trendy Niederdorf district.
It previously did not have any stores in Switzerland, but this has now
changed with an outstanding location at Münstergasse 21 in the heart
of Zurich. The retail space was previously occupied by Liebeskind with
the new flagship store opening in time for Christmas.American Vintage
is a young and successful fashion label from Paris. Established in
2005 by French designer Mickaël Azoulay, the company produces
men’s and ladies’ streetwear characterised by simplicity and inspired
by American trends.
The first Raclette-to-go restaurant opened in Zurich
The Starbucks coffee shop at the Rindermarkt 1 closed its doors, making
room for Raclette to set up its first Zurich Raclette-to-go restaurant at
the address. The lease has been running since 1st October, after a
two-month conversion, the Raclette Factory opened in early December.
The restaurant is not just a restaurant but it is also a shop which sells
cheese, with other Raclette items and souvenirs to be added.
Goldhaus opened a new store in Zurich
Goldhaus has strengthened its presence in Zurich with a new store
opening in the city centre. The jewellery brand launched a new store at
Rüdenplatz 2, near Limmatquai with surrounding neighbours including
H&M, Esprit, Claire’s and Superdry. The store, which formerly housed
Philippe Pfeiffer, offers latest collections of the brand.
VIU launched a new store in Zurich
The Swiss design, handmade in Italy and Japan eyewear brand VIU,
has opened a new store in Zurich on 13th October 2016. Located at
Limmatquai 16, the store is nearby Hotel Helmhaus, Caroll and Dune
London stores. The new store offers the latest collections and is part
of the brand’s expansion plan in the European market.
Joe & The Juice announced flagship store opening in Zurich
Joe & The Juice has conquered Switzerland in 2016 and is preparing to
launch its Swiss flagship store following the successful opening of the
two stores in Lucerne and the Sihlcity in Zurich. The store is located in
a top location at Schifflände 26, Zurich which used to be a Companys
store. The grand opening to the public is planned in early 2017.
Dune opened store in Zurich
Zurich has welcomed the arrival of Dune London, the British footwear
brand renowned for providing luxurious trend-led designs at accessible
price points. Dune has opened its first store in the city, located at
Schifflände 24, Limmatquai, replacing the former Stree One space.
Opening doors on 13th April 2016, the Zurich store joins two other

Founded in 1876, St. Galler Weinhaus Martel opened its doors in the

Emmi to install its store in Zurich
Emmi, the milk chain opened a new store in Zurich by the end of
May. The new store is located at the former Swisscom store, at
Stadelhoferstrasse 28. The event is part of Swiss expansion plan,
with further opening of its Yobar concept store in Lucerne in April.
Day opened its first store in Zurich
Day, the Swiss shoes brand has opened its first own store in Zurich.
The new store is located at Stadelhoferstrasse 42, around the corner

H&M presents in Lucerne station
Since the SBB Travel Agency moved to the upper floor of the Lucerne
station, there were vacant space for H&M to move in the location. The

many as 1,200 square metres of retail space and it can accommodate
five transactions.

Lucerne has scored a new The Body Shop store when it opened its doors

Joe & The Juice expanded in Switzerland
Danish coffee and juice import Joe & the Juice aimed to attact big
fans in Switzerland when it opened the first national store in Lucerne.
Launching on 18th March 2016, the store is settled at the Lucerne
Station, inside the newly renovated area. As the company announced,

Freie Strasse gets a Spanish popular fashion chain
The former Kost Sport space at Freie Strasse 51 is not empty for

Basel scores the first Yooji’s Sushi store
Yooji's Sushi has set up their first store in Basel, which was offcially
opened doors in April 2016. The new store is located at Gerbergasse
40, which formerly housed a Paul Kehl store. Located a few meters
from the Market Square, the Yooji's Basel is easy to reach in downtown
on foot. The spacious 69-cover restaurant is located on the ground
floor, making it wheelchair accessible. The first Swiss store opened in
Zurich in 2000. Up to now, the brand has stores in Zurich, Winterthur,
Bern, Lucerne and Zug. The chain specialises in Japanese dishes with
an exclusive menu.

Titolo has opened a 140 square-metre sneaker store in the centre
of Basel. Following the store openings in Zurich and Bern, the brand
officially launched its third location at Steinenvorstadt 30 in March 2017.

New 500-square-metre Soho Bar in Steinvorstadt
Bar Soho is set to be in the heart of Steinvorstadt and offers a total of
approximately 550-square-metres of space on three levels. Inspired by
London's so-called Soho district, Gastronom Arton Krasniqi, the owner,
wants to stir up Basel's nightlife.The Bar can be found at Steinenvorstadt

Dunkin’ Donuts opened first shop in Switzerland
On 1st March 2016, the first branch of the international chain Dunkin’
Donuts in Switzerland officially opened its doors to the public in Basel.
The store is located at Greifengasse 17 and is operated by the exclusive

Motel One opened first property in Switzerland

The traditional Swiss bodywear brand established in 1941, Calida has

offers customers the full range of Calida’s products, including daywear
and sleepwear, loungewear, tops, knits, accessories, swimwear and

Agent Provocateur opening in Globus Geneva
The British luxe lingerie brand Agent Provocateur opened a brand
new concession in Geneva late 2016. The new point of sale is located
in the Globus Department Store, at Rue du Rhône 48, in the heart of
the city. The new space in Geneva is a luxurious emporium featuring
boudoir inspired furnishings that complement the collections and
indulge the customer.
2019 will be the end of Manor at Bahnhofstrasse
The landlord Swiss Life and tenant Manor are discussing the rent for
the 2016 whilst in 2019 the contract ends and Manor will close their
doors on Bahnhofstrasse. In 1900 the department store Brann, which
is now Manor, opened his door. With a the plan of a renovation for 100
million Swiss Francs, the landlord Swiss Life wants to raise the rent
from six million Swiss Francs to 19 million Swiss Francs to finance the
renovation. But as Manor is currently occupying the building they can
only start after they move out. The city of Zurich has their hands tied
as they do not own the property.
Nike opened shop-in-shop in Manor Geneva
Manor Geneva has welcomed the largest Nike shop in the French-
speaking region of Switzerland. The shop opened its doors on 27th
April 2016 inside the prestigious department store at Rue de Cornavin
6. It showcases collections dedicated to Nike + Run Club and Nike +
Training Club.

Jelmoli launched a new shoes world
Jelmoli opened a new shoes world of 1,400 square metres at the end
of April 2016. The new retail space offers products from more than 120
brands with 40 brands for men on 400 square metres on the first floor
and 80 brands for women in 1,000 square metres on the second floor,
in the Jemoli’s existing shoes surface. The new store, which focuses

world on its ground floor. The new multibrand store Asseccoirewelt

to welcome customers from 26th February 2016.
Asics reopened shop in Jelmoli
In early 2016, the Japanese sportswear brand Asics relaunched a new
shop-in-shop on the fourth floor of Jelmoli Department Store in Zurich.
The 120-square-metre unit is a true renovation which has implemented
the brand new concept and thus served as a model for the other Asics
stores. It is also the second of its kind in Europe to be built on the model
of Asics Performance. The new store equipment has been designed to
showcase the wide variety of performance products from different sports
to customers.
Bucherer launched store in Jelmoli
Specialising in watchmaking and jewellery, Bucherer has moved into
Jelmoli in Zurich and opened a new 200-square-metre boutique in
Switzerland’s most elegant department store. Located on the ground
Sephora launched its first store in Switzerland
Sephora has finally come to Switzerland. The cosmetic brand has
opened the first Swiss store in Geneva on 19th May 2016. The new
store is located in the Manor Geneva at Rue de Cornavin 6 and covers
an area of 100 square metres of retail space. This is the first time in
the world that Sephora launches its shop in shop concept completely
revisited and contemporary. In 2016, Sephora plans to open six more
stores in the French part of Switzerland. Over the coming years, the
expansion could extend to other parts of Switzerland.
Bucherer, Jelmoli Department Store, Zurich
Loeb to close branch in Shoppyland Schönbühl
The Bernese department store Loeb AG wants to withdraw from the
shopping centre business and is closing its branch in Shoppyland
Schönbühl on 28th February 2017. The company does not want to
extend the 2017 expiring lease. Loeb will concentrate on the sales
transactions in the inner cities in the future. Loeb has operated a branch
in Shoppyland since the opening of the shopping centre in the 1970s.
After several periods of reconstruction, Loeb opened in 2007 at a new
smaller location on the ground floor with a customised concept that put
the focus on the product ranges of fashion and accessories.

New Coop Mall in Ilanz, Switzerland	
ZIMA Projektentwicklung AG is in charge of building a new shopping
centre in the industrial zone Grüneck of Ilanz, Graubünden Canton. A
new Coop supermarket will be located at the site where there is already
a Bau+Hobby Building. Coop has invested 25 million Swiss Francs in the
construction project. The supermarket with 2,000 square metres of retail
space, including news stands and flower department, will be connected
by a footbridge to the Bau+Hobby. The construction is expected to start
in spring 2017 and the opening is scheduled for early 2018.
Mall of Switzerland to open in 2017	
Located just outside Lucerne and close to Zurich, Luxembourg-based
developer and private equity fund manager Freo Group is developing
the Mall of Switzerland, which will comprise of approximately 46,000
square metres of retail area and 5,000 square metres of restaurant
space, a 12-screen cinema featuring Switzerland’s largest IMAX screen,
an indoor standing wave surfing experience as well as health club
and a children’s play area. The Mall will feature two separate zones,
connected by La Strada, a promenade of selected premium brand Swiss
and international brands. In the heart of the Mall will be Ebisquare,
an open air events and festivals space. The mall is expected to be
completed in Autumn 2017.
Giroud Olma to invest 100 million Swiss Francs in Sälipark	
The family business Giroud Olma wants to invest in the next four years
100 million Swiss Francs in the building of the shopping centre Sälipark
in the heart of Olten, Switzerland. The project Sälipark 2020 which was
being developed in close cooperation with the authorities of Olten city,
is a pilot project in the new urban mobility plan, which will coordinate
the private and public transport optimally together. Today Sälipark offers
13,000 square metres of GLA and 28 retail outlets. The investor plans
to add about 40 shops of local, national and international suppliers
with a total of 17,000 square metres of retail space. The construction
work for the Sälipark 2020 is expected to begin in the summer 2017
and take approximately three years to complete.
Migros opened new retail concept centre in Bern	
On 8th August 2016, Migros Aare opened Welle 7, a retail centre with
new concept situated at the railway station Bern PostParc. Covering
an area of around 10,000 square metres and eight decks, it offers a
unique and diverse mix of 25 stores, catering, education, services and
business for commuters, pedestrians and enterprises. The new centre
was estimated to cost an investment of 55 million Swiss Francs.
Franz Carl Weber to open a new branch in Chur	
Franz Carl Weber, one of the oldest toy shops of the world, has opened
its 20th store in the City West shopping centre of Chur. With 450 square
metres of retail space, the new toys paradise is situated in the largest
shopping centre in the Swiss canton of Graubünden with a broad and
carefully compiled quality range. The store took grand opening on 30th
September 2016.
Migros to anchor in the Mall of Switzerland	
Migros will be the main tenant in the under-construction shopping Mall
of Switzerland. The Ebikon shopping mall will be the largest shopping
centre in central Switzerland when it opens the doors in late 2017.
Migros will lease a huge space for a Migros supermarket, the retail
formats Do it + Garden Migros, Melectronics, Micasa and SportXX,
a Migros restaurant and a fitness centre. In total, the retail space for
Migros will cover 7,000 square metres and 2,000 square metres for
fitness centre. Previously, Coop was mentioned as the main tenant in
the mall but Migros was then finalised to be in the space.
Siska Heuberger to renew Neuwiesen Shopping Centre	
The 34-year-old shopping centre in Winterthur, Neuwiesen will be
extensively renovated from April 2017 to September 2019. This was
announced by the Siska Heuberger Holding AG. The renovation is
according to the current needs of a modern customer-oriented centre
for the food and non-food sector. In 1982 Neuwiesen Shopping Centre
opened in Winterthur and now has currently 25 shops, six restaurants and
520 parking spaces. Siska Heuberger and Migros Eastern Switzerland
have also extended the existing long-term lease. Thus, the Migros will
remain in the long-term main tenant in the mall Neuwiesen. They will
continue to be represented with a supermarket, a Migros restaurant, a
Migros takeaways and with their specialist markets Melectronics and
Do it + Garden in the centre.
Emmen Center under 50-million-Swiss Franc renovation	
The Emmen Center in Emmenbrücke near Lucerne will be refurbished
for about 50 million Swiss Francs. In particular, the architecture of
the ‘70s will be modernised, and the facades will be renovated and
redesigned. The project will cost the owner Frères Group more than
35 million Swiss Francs, while the remaining 15 million Swiss Francs
will be received from the tenants. Work in the indoor and outdoor areas
are expected to completed by Easter 2017.
Zara arrived in Emmen Center	
Zara, the international clothing and accessory manufacturers from Spain
has opened its first store in the greater Lucerne in Emmen Center, one
of the first and largest shopping centres in Switzerland. On more than
2,000 square metres of retail space, Zara offers its full range of fashion
products for women, men and children. The store officially opened
doors on 19th August 2016.
Dufry renewed and expanded critical Zürich Airport duty free contract	
Dufry announced on 25th July 2016 that it has signed an agreement
with Zürich Airport to renew its contract there until 2028. The critical
ten-year-agreement at one of Dufry’s key global locations, also foresees
a full renovation of the retailer’s activities at the airport, which will be
implemented in the next two years. The new shops will feature the most
up-to-date shop layouts in a fresh new look, Dufry pledged, further
optimising passenger flows in Departures and Arrivals.
Swatch Group’s retail brand opened latest boutique in Zurich	
Swatch Group’s retail brand Hour Passion has opened its latest boutique
at Zurich Airport in Switzerland. The 300-square-metre airside store
carries around 30 watch brands including Swatch Group owned brands
such as Blancpain, Omega and Longines and will be open seven days
a week. With a completely open-fronted design, the new boutique is
completely walk-through with the retailer’s latest luxury interior style.
Second Hour Passion boutique opened doors at Zurich Airport	
Hour Passion, a Swatch Group concept store, opened a second boutique
in the passenger zone of Zurich Airport in early December 2016. Hour
Passion’s new boutique on Level 1 of the Airside Center features watch
brands known in particular for their high quality. These include Swiss
Made brands Omega, Longines, Breitling, Rado, Tag Heuer and Tissot
as well as jewellery brands such as Chopard.
Fabric Frontline celebrated new Zurich store
Fabric Frontline, the handmade luxury scarf brand, has opened a
new store in Zurich. Located in the Airside Center at Zurich airport,
the new store was celebrated in a festive atmosphere and offers the
latest collections from the scarf brand. The brand wass among many
local and international brands that arrived in the Airside Center in 2016.
Dufry opened extended new Basel Euroshop	
On 16th June 2016, Dufry and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg
inaugurated the retailer’s main travel retail walk-through store in the
centre of its commercial space at EuroAirport – post security and just
prior to the boarding area. The new-look retail area has been enlarged
by 200 square metres to 1,032 square metres. The new store is said to
take the shopping experience for airport passengers ‘to the next level’
after a refurbishment which lasted five months, where the store continued
to trade throughout the improvements. Dufry says this has nevertheless
paid off, with positive feedback from EuroAirport passengers – many of
whom are regular repeat travellers. The retailer adds that the concept
of this new-look Dufry main shop is also better tailored for present
customer expectations, including the new unique services that are
designed to enhance the customer experience.

  • 6. Purchasing Power Europe 2016 on the rise Purchasing power is on the rise in central and eastern European countries. Europeans have around 0.3 percent more nominal purchasing power per person in 2016 compared to last year. The available net income of the population varies substantially among the 42 countries. The highest average purchasing power can be found in Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Luxembourg, while the lowest is in Belarus, Moldova and the Ukraine. Ukrainians have only one eightieth the average purchasing power of Liechtenstein inhabitants. A total of approximately €9.18 trillion is available to European consumers in 2016 for spending and saving. This corresponds to an average per-capita purchasing power of €13,672 for the 42 countries evaluated in the study, which is a nominal increase of approximately 0.3 percent. The low growth in Europe's average per-capita purchasing power is due to exchange rate effects and stagnating growth rates in some of the larger countries, among other factors. Nonetheless, many countries have growth rates above 5 percent, including Iceland, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Malta, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Latvia. Key economic issues that influence retailers in Europe The European economy has recovered from the doldrums of 2012-2014, largely due to the aggressive monetary policy of the European Central Bank (ECB), which involves massive purchases of government bonds, combined with the positive effect of low oil prices. The ECB policy has suppressed the value of the euro, thereby boosting export competitiveness; created inflation when there otherwise would have been deflation, thereby lowering real borrowing costs; boosted asset prices, thereby increasing wealth and stimulating consumer spending; and improved credit market conditions, thereby enabling small and medium-sized companies to regain access to capital. The result has been modest yet somewhatdisappointing growth. Inflation remains extremely low, leading to increasing expectations that the 01 Overview Continental Europe ECB will boost the size of its asset purchasing program. This would have the effect of further lowering the value of the euro.The ECB policy, combined with the low price of oil, has led to a revival in the growth of consumer spending, an improvement in credit market conditions, and renewed growth of employment as well as a decline in unemployment. It has also had a positive impact on export growth. Yet it has failed to significantly increase businessinvestment. Within Europe, some countries are performing better than others.The star performers are Spain and Ireland, while Italy has begun to show signs of revival. German domestic demand has been steady, but export growth has been stymied by troubles in emerging markets. Outside of the Eurozone, the British economy has been growing at an admirable pace, with a strong labor market helping to fuel steady growth of retail spending.Despite Europe’s evident revival, risks remain. With ruinously high unemploymentinmanycountries,Europehasseentheriseofmanyanti-euro and anti-EU parties, of both the left and right.As this process unfolds, it could create greater difficulties for Europe’s governments when they attempt to resolve imbalances and crises, and if they choose to attempt greater fiscal and financial integration. Indeed, the latter are probably necessary in order to create an architecture that would make the euro more sustainable.Another risk concerns demographics.The population of Europe is aging and, in many countries, the working age population is in decline. This threatens growth and also makes it more difficult to provide adequate services to the elderly population. One solution is to allow more immigration. Yet this is fraught with political controversy and threatens social tension, as evidenced by the recent debate about welcoming Syrian refugees. Europeans are becoming richer and richer During the past few years, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Iceland, the Baltic States, and Kosovo have been among the countries which have managed to boost their populations‘ purchasing power (in Euro) by the widest margin in percentage terms. In contrast, the largest nominal € losses between 2010 and 2015 have been registered in Greece and Cyprus (debt crisis), Ukraine and Russia (military conflict), as well as Belarus. However, even countries with nominal increases of up to 10%, such as Italy, Spain, or Hungary, still had to contend with economic difficulties. In real terms, i.e. with inflation taken into account, purchasing power decreased or stagnated in these countries. Two special cases are also among the countries with nominal increases of between 10% and 25%: in both Turkey and Serbia, high rates of inflation ate up these gains and have resulted in decreased purchasing power in real terms. Kosovo has experienced high relative growth rates, such that purchasing power has since caught up to that of Albania. However, since the country’s purchasing power was low to begin with, the gains have been similarly small in absolute terms. Highly positive development has been observed also in the Baltic States as well as Iceland. Although the United Kingdom and Switzerland have registered purchasing power increases in their national currencies, the high rates of growth in Euro are mostly an effect of exchange rate levels. These levels are likely to remain relatively stable for the Swiss franc, but following the Brexit vote, absolute purchasing power in Euro in the United Kingdom is expected to be much lower for 2016. European consumer confidence rising quickly The current edition of the RegioData Shopping Climate Index (SCI)* points to a very pleasing development of the shopping climate in many Western and Central European countries. However, the situation does look quite different in the CEE region. With the exception of a select few noticeable improvements, the consumer climate in the region as a whole has developed rather negatively. This is particularly noticeable in the drop of the CEE region’s average SCI index, at a time when the total European average has actually risen. In particular, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, and Belarus are among the countries whose SCI’s have been very low for many years now. But the shopping climate has been worsening – quickly – also in Ukraine and in Russia over a longer period of time.   • 7. improvements are also not likely in most of the other Eastern European countries. However, Serbia and the Czech Republic are among the few CEE countries with positive shopping climate development as of the latest edition of the index. In contrast, consumer confidence has been thoroughly positive in Western and Central Europe, compared to previous periods. Particularly noteworthy developments have been registered in the former “crisis states” Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. The shopping climate in these three countries has improved dramatically in recent times. In the current edition of the index, Ireland has even recorded the highest SCI increase among all examined countries. The shopping climate is also positive in Germany. In fact, Switzerland and Germany’s SCI indices are both above 100, followed closely by Austria with a value just below 100. Consumer confidence is positive also in France, Iceland, and the Scandinavian countries. The situation is not expected to change significantly in the near future. Purchasing power in Europe: The Swiss at the summit Absolute purchasing power is truly booming in Switzerland. Thanks to the exchange rate, the absolute purchasing power of the Swiss is nearly 40,000 Euros per capita per year, yielding first place in Europe. Due to comparatively worse growth, Luxemburg has had to give up its traditional role as frontrunner. Strikingly positive purchasing power development is being observed in Iceland. In 2013, the country was not even among theTop 10, but now Iceland is in fifth place. The skilful politics and policy for dealing with the financial crisis are clearly showing their effects with particularly good purchasing power development. In the Scandinavian countries, the economic situation is relatively stable, but exchange rates may obscure the calculations – the current decreases are thus entirely a result of exchange rate fluctuations. The two problem children, not only in terms of purchasing power, are unsurprisingly Russia and Ukraine. Both countries have been fighting uphill battles the past few years. Absolute purchasing power in Ukraine is currently around 1,190 Euros per capita per year, one of the lowest in the ranking. The difficult situation in Greece is also no secret. Absolute purchasing power in Greece had already plummeted below 10,000 in 2014 and continues to decline. In contrast, Cyprus appears to have gotten back on track after its own financial troubles – the situation is stabilizing and Cyprus is currently the most prosperous southern European country. RegioData has often shown that there is considerable inequality not only between countries, but also in the development within individual countries. Nonetheless, the trend is moving toward a narrowing of the gap between rich and poor. For example in Italy, the well-known North-South gap has been closing slowly but steadily over several years now. Whereas in 2012 the difference in purchasing power between the wealthiest and poorest municipalities was still nearly 17,000 Euros, by 2014 this difference had decreased to around 15,500 Euros. Weekday expands in Europe Weekday opened nine stores in Europe during 2016. The fashion chain has opened in new markets, such as Sweden, Belgium andAustria. Back in April, the first branch was opened in Vienna, at the same time, another store was opened in Sweden. There were three more store openings in Norway, joining four existing stores in the country. Dunkin' Donuts has big plans to expand in Europe America may run on Dunkin’, but the retail chain is not stopping there. Dunkin’ Donuts opened 55 stores across Europe in 2015, boosting its continental footprint to more than 220 locations. The store openings are part of expansion plan in Europe that began at the end of 2014. The 2015 store openings brought the American coffee-and-doughnut chain to four European countries—Denmark, Georgia, Iceland and Poland—for the first time. When Dunkin’launched the expansion, it planned to open more than 1,000 stores across the continent that catered to local tastes. The industry, which accounts for a 10th of Switzerland’s exports, has also been hurt by the surging Swiss franc, which forced many brands to cut prices in export markets to stay competitive. The emergence of smartwatches from Apple Inc. started to weigh on demand for lower-end timepieces. In response, Omega put two James Bond-theme lines on sale, aiming to attract younger clientele. Swatch Group has spotted an end to the sharp downturn in the Swiss watch industry after sales fell more than 10 percent in 2016 and net profit almost halved. The company, whose brands include Omega and Blancpain as well as mass market Swatch products, said that the final two months of 2016 and the start of 2017 had seen very good growth in watches and jewellery revenues, especially in mainland China. Swatch expected “healthy growth” in sales in local currencies in 2017. Swatch reported net profit had fallen 47 percent to CHF 593 million in 2016, while sales dropped 11 per cent to CHF 7.55 billion. In 2016, Swiss watchmakers had their worst year since the global financial crisis, with exports falling 10 percent, largely as a result of weakness in Hong Kong and the US, the industry’s two biggest markets. Sales to Chinese buyers have been hit in recent years by a corruption clampdown in the country, while consumer spending on luxury goods in Europe has been damped by terrorist attacks. But Nick Hayek, Swatch chief executive, has argued the downturn does not represent a crisis for the industry and is largely the result of globetrotting consumers increasingly choosing to buy where prices are cheapest. “The environment is improving but it is still going to be a choppy year,” said Mr Cox. “If you look at some of the company’s past outlook statements, its comments for ‘healthy local currency growth’ look actually quite cautious.” In early European trading, Swatch’s shares were down 3 per cent at CHF 339.9, reflecting how its 2016 results fell short of analysts’ expectations. Swatch reported “double-digit” sales in local currency in the UK, after June’s referendum vote to leave the EU sent the pound sharply lower — as well as the cost of luxury watches to overseas buyers in London boutiques. Swatch’s optimistic outlook has meant it has held back from dramatic steps to cut production. Swatch said sales in Hong Kong had normalised in recent months, while demand in mainland China had picked up. Other Asian markets had also recovered, while the Middle East had recorded “double-digit growth”. Swatch’s expectation of “healthy growth” in local currencies in 2017 applied to the US and Europe. Switzerland is key piece in the puzzle for Jigsaw expansion Jigsaw is eyeing Switzerland as the launch pad for a European expansion to sidestep fears over Brexit. The fashion retailer has defied the gloom felt by some of its high street rivals following a collections revamp under the leadership of Peter Ruis. The Chief Executive, who has an ambition to grow Jigsaw’s revenues from 100 million to 500 million Pounds, said: “Switzerland has a good economy and no matter what’s happening in Europe they will manage it.” Jigsaw’s planned European expansion would largely focus on department store concessions, which are lower risk than store leases. The retailer has 77 shops in the UK, four in the US, five in Australia, two in South Africa and three in the Middle East. Aldi plans 120 new stores in Switzerland Aldi Switzerland has big expansion plans. The discounter aims to develop an additional network for 120 stores, therefore increasing the total branches to 300 throughout the country. Aldi will also invest 70 million Swiss Francs in the modernisation of the existing store network. All locations are to receive a new store design, the convenience sector and the presentation of fresh fruit and vegetables are also to be enhanced. KFC plans market entry in Switzerland The US fast food chain KFC reportedly plans in the next two years to enter the market in Switzerland. Currently KFC should be looking for locations and franchise partners such as in Zurich, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Lucerne and Winterthur. The company reveals nothing about its expansion plans, so it is not yet known how many KFC outlets will be opened in Switzerland. The company had already tried in 2004 to enter Switzerland by itself, but the stores closed. Bata closes its 29 Swiss stores The 29 Swiss stores of specialist footwear retailer Bata will close down. The group made the announcement on 18th April 2016, justifying the measure with competition from online sales and the Swiss franc's strength, which encourages local consumers to buy in neighbouring countries. As a result, the group explained that it will proceed to close down its 29 Swiss stores. Agent Provocateur opening in Globus Geneva The British luxe lingerie brand Agent Provocateur opened a brand new concession in Geneva late 2016. The new point of sale is located in the Globus Department Store, at Rue du Rhône 48, in the heart of the city. The new space in Geneva is a luxurious emporium featuring boudoir inspired furnishings that complement the collections and indulge the customer. 2019 will be the end of Manor at Bahnhofstrasse The landlord Swiss Life and tenant Manor are discussing the rent for the 2016 whilst in 2019 the contract ends and Manor will close their doors on Bahnhofstrasse. In 1900 the department store Brann, which is now Manor, opened his door. With a the plan of a renovation for 100 million Swiss Francs, the landlord Swiss Life wants to raise the rent from six million Swiss Francs to 19 million Swiss Francs to finance the renovation. But as Manor is currently occupying the building they can only start after they move out. The city of Zurich has their hands tied as they do not own the property. Nike opened shop-in-shop in Manor Geneva Manor Geneva has welcomed the largest Nike shop in the French- speaking region of Switzerland. The shop opened its doors on 27th April 2016 inside the prestigious department store at Rue de Cornavin 6. It showcases collections dedicated to Nike + Run Club and Nike + Training Club. Sephora, Manor Geneva, Geneva Jelmoli launched a new shoes world Jelmoli opened a new shoes world of 1,400 square metres at the end of April 2016. Asics reopened shop in Jelmoli In early 2016, the Japanese sportswear brand Asics relaunched a new shop-in-shop on the fourth floor of Jelmoli Department Store in Zurich. The 120-square-metre unit is a true renovation which has implemented the brand new concept and thus served as a model for the other Asics stores. It is also the second of its kind in Europe to be built on the model of Asics Performance. The new store equipment has been designed to showcase the wide variety of performance products from different sports to customers. Bucherer launched store in Jelmoli Specialising in watchmaking and jewellery, Bucherer has moved into Jelmoli in Zurich and opened a new 200-square-metre boutique in Switzerland’s most elegant department store. Located on the ground Sephora launched its first store in Switzerland Sephora has finally come to Switzerland. The cosmetic brand has opened the first Swiss store in Geneva on 19th May 2016. The new store is located in the Manor Geneva at Rue de Cornavin 6 and covers an area of 100 square metres of retail space. This is the first time in the world that Sephora launches its shop in shop concept completely revisited and contemporary. In 2016, Sephora plans to open six more stores in the French part of Switzerland. Over the coming years, the expansion could extend to other parts of Switzerland. Bucherer, Jelmoli Department Store, Zurich Loeb to close branch in Shoppyland Schönbühl The Bernese department store Loeb AG wants to withdraw from the shopping centre business and is closing its branch in Shoppyland Schönbühl on 28th February 2017. The company does not want to extend the 2017 expiring lease. Loeb will concentrate on the sales transactions in the inner cities in the future. Loeb has operated a branch in Shoppyland since the opening of the shopping centre in the 1970s. After several periods of reconstruction, Loeb opened in 2007 at a new smaller location on the ground floor with a customised concept that put the focus on the product ranges of fashion and accessories. Fabric Frontline, Zurich Airport, Zurich ,Neuwiesen Shopping Centre, Winterthur New Coop Mall in Ilanz, Switzerland ZIMA Projektentwicklung AG is in charge of building a new shopping centre in the industrial zone Grüneck of Ilanz, Graubünden Canton. A new Coop supermarket will be located at the site where there is already a Bau+Hobby Building. Coop has invested 25 million Swiss Francs in the construction project. The supermarket with 2,000 square metres of retail space, including news stands and flower department, will be connected by a footbridge to the Bau+Hobby. The construction is expected to start in spring 2017 and the opening is scheduled for early 2018. Mall of Switzerland to open in 2017 Located just outside Lucerne and close to Zurich, Luxembourg-based developer and private equity fund manager Freo Group is developing the Mall of Switzerland, which will comprise of approximately 46,000 square metres of retail area and 5,000 square metres of restaurant space, a 12-screen cinema featuring Switzerland’s largest IMAX screen, an indoor standing wave surfing experience as well as health club and a children’s play area. The Mall will feature two separate zones, connected by La Strada, a promenade of selected premium brand Swiss and international brands. In the heart of the Mall will be Ebisquare, an open air events and festivals space. The mall is expected to be completed in Autumn 2017. Giroud Olma to invest 100 million Swiss Francs in Sälipark The family business Giroud Olma wants to invest in the next four years 100 million Swiss Francs in the building of the shopping centre Sälipark in the heart of Olten, Switzerland. The project Sälipark 2020 which was being developed in close cooperation with the authorities of Olten city, is a pilot project in the new urban mobility plan, which will coordinate the private and public transport optimally together. Today Sälipark offers 13,000 square metres of GLA and 28 retail outlets. The investor plans to add about 40 shops of local, national and international suppliers with a total of 17,000 square metres of retail space. The construction work for the Sälipark 2020 is expected to begin in the summer 2017 and take approximately three years to complete. Migros opened new retail concept centre in Bern On 8th August 2016, Migros Aare opened Welle 7, a retail centre with new concept situated at the railway station Bern PostParc. Covering an area of around 10,000 square metres and eight decks, it offers a unique and diverse mix of 25 stores, catering, education, services and business for commuters, pedestrians and enterprises. The new centre was estimated to cost an investment of 55 million Swiss Francs. Franz Carl Weber to open a new branch in Chur Franz Carl Weber, one of the oldest toy shops of the world, has opened its 20th store in the City West shopping centre of Chur. With 450 square metres of retail space, the new toys paradise is situated in the largest shopping centre in the Swiss canton of Graubünden with a broad and carefully compiled quality range. The store took grand opening on 30th September 2016. Migros to anchor in the Mall of Switzerland Migros will be the main tenant in the under-construction shopping Mall of Switzerland. The Ebikon shopping mall will be the largest shopping centre in central Switzerland when it opens the doors in late 2017. Migros will lease a huge space for a Migros supermarket, the retail formats Do it + Garden Migros, Melectronics, Micasa and SportXX, a Migros restaurant and a fitness centre. In total, the retail space for Migros will cover 7,000 square metres and 2,000 square metres for fitness centre. Previously, Coop was mentioned as the main tenant in the mall but Migros was then finalised to be in the space. Siska Heuberger to renew Neuwiesen Shopping Centre The 34-year-old shopping centre in Winterthur, Neuwiesen will be extensively renovated from April 2017 to September 2019. This was announced by the Siska Heuberger Holding AG. The renovation is according to the current needs of a modern customer-oriented centre for the food and non-food sector. In 1982 Neuwiesen Shopping Centre opened in Winterthur and now has currently 25 shops, six restaurants and 520 parking spaces. Siska Heuberger and Migros Eastern Switzerland have also extended the existing long-term lease. Thus, the Migros will remain in the long-term main tenant in the mall Neuwiesen. They will continue to be represented with a supermarket, a Migros restaurant, a Migros takeaways and with their specialist markets Melectronics and Do it + Garden in the centre. Emmen Center under 50-million-Swiss Franc renovation The Emmen Center in Emmenbrücke near Lucerne will be refurbished for about 50 million Swiss Francs. In particular, the architecture of the ‘70s will be modernised, and the facades will be renovated and redesigned. The project will cost the owner Frères Group more than 35 million Swiss Francs, while the remaining 15 million Swiss Francs will be received from the tenants. Work in the indoor and outdoor areas are expected to completed by Easter 2017. Zara arrived in Emmen Center Zara, the international clothing and accessory manufacturers from Spain has opened its first store in the greater Lucerne in Emmen Center, one of the first and largest shopping centres in Switzerland. On more than 2,000 square metres of retail space, Zara offers its full range of fashion products for women, men and children. The store officially opened doors on 19th August 2016. Dufry renewed and expanded critical Zürich Airport duty free contract Dufry announced on 25th July 2016 that it has signed an agreement with Zürich Airport to renew its contract there until 2028. The critical ten-year-agreement at one of Dufry’s key global locations, also foresees a full renovation of the retailer’s activities at the airport, which will be implemented in the next two years. The new shops will feature the most up-to-date shop layouts in a fresh new look, Dufry pledged, further optimising passenger flows in Departures and Arrivals. Swatch Group’s retail brand opened latest boutique in Zurich Swatch Group’s retail brand Hour Passion has opened its latest boutique at Zurich Airport in Switzerland. The 300-square-metre airside store carries around 30 watch brands including Swatch Group owned brands such as Blancpain, Omega and Longines and will be open seven days a week. With a completely open-fronted design, the new boutique is completely walk-through with the retailer’s latest luxury interior style. Second Hour Passion boutique opened doors at Zurich Airport Hour Passion, a Swatch Group concept store, opened a second boutique in the passenger zone of Zurich Airport in early December 2016. Hour Passion’s new boutique on Level 1 of the Airside Center features watch brands known in particular for their high quality. These include Swiss Made brands Omega, Longines, Breitling, Rado, Tag Heuer and Tissot as well as jewellery brands such as Chopard. Fabric Frontline celebrated new Zurich store Fabric Frontline, the handmade luxury scarf brand, has opened a new store in Zurich. Located in the Airside Center at Zurich airport, the new store was celebrated in a festive atmosphere and offers the latest collections from the scarf brand. The brand wass among many local and international brands that arrived in the Airside Center in 2016. Dufry opened extended new Basel Euroshop On 16th June 2016, Dufry and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg inaugurated the retailer’s main travel retail walk-through store in the centre of its commercial space at EuroAirport – post security and just prior to the boarding area. The new-look retail area has been enlarged by 200 square metres to 1,032 square metres. The new store is said to take the shopping experience for airport passengers ‘to the next level’ after a refurbishment which lasted five months, where the store continued to trade throughout the improvements. Dufry says this has nevertheless paid off, with positive feedback from EuroAirport passengers – many of whom are regular repeat travellers. The retailer adds that the concept of this new-look Dufry main shop is also better tailored for present customer expectations, including the new unique services that are designed to enhance the customer experience.
